Transcript
Hi parents and students. This is how spelling works in third
grade! On Monday all students will take a pre-test. Those
students that get 100% on the pre-test will receive a new list of
12 challenge words.
All students will have a spelling test on Friday! 
All third graders have spelling homework each week. If you
received 100% on the pre-test, you must choose an activity from
the list in Set 1. You must use the challenge words to complete
the homework assignment. If you did not receive 100% on the
pre-test, then you must choose an activity from the list in Set 2.
On Mondays, your child’s list goes home. It is your child’s
responsibility to study whichever way works best for them. They
do not have to hand anything in on Tuesday morning. On
Wednesday night, they need to pick ONE spelling activity from
the list in the sets below and hand it in on Thursday morning.
Weekly Spelling Homework:
Monday = study any way that works best for you
Tuesday = study words
Wednesday = choose a spelling activity
Thursday = study for test
Friday = test in class
Spelling Homework Activities
Set 1 with a more challenging word list
(for those who got 100% on the pre-test)
1. Write each spelling word. Next to each word, write two additional
words of at least three letters that can be spelled using the letters
in the weekly spelling word. These new words must be spelled
correctly.
2. Use a thesaurus to write a synonym for each of your spelling words.
Each synonym must be spelled correctly.
3. Write a mnemonic sentence to help you remember each of your
spelling words. Each letter of the word should start a word in the
sentence. For example, a mnemonic sentence for the word throw
might be: Ted has rented one wheelbarrow.
4. Create a DOUBLE DIGIT value for each letter in the alphabet at the
top of your paper. Next, total up the week’s spelling list according to
the value you gave each letter.
5. Classify the list of words into these categories: nouns, adjectives,
verbs, and adverbs.
6. Write each spelling word and another word that rhymes with the word
from the list. Each rhyming word must be a REAL word (no made up
ones) and they must be spelled correctly.
7. Using a dictionary, look up the definition of each of your spelling
words and write the definition out. Record only one definition if
there are multiple listed.
8. Write a short story including your spelling words. Your spelling words
must be underlined in the story. Your story must have words spelled
correctly and have few grammatical errors.
Spelling Homework Activities
Set 2 with our weekly words
(for those who did not get 100% on the pre-test)
1. Make and complete a word search using www.puzzlemaker.com
2. Write tongue twisters using at least 10 of your spelling words.
Example: Sally sold seashells by the seashore.
3. Cut out letters from a magazine to create the words from your
spelling list. Paste the letters neatly on a piece of paper.
4. Write a friendly letter to someone using at least 10 of your spelling
words. Underline each spelling word after you’ve used it. Remember
to include all five parts of a friendly letter in your example!
5. Write each spelling word without its vowels. Replace each vowel with
a symbol. For example, h@*r
6. Print each spelling word down one column of your paper and then write
each word in cursive.
7. Write your spelling words and then cross out any silent letters in each
of the words.
8. Write your spelling words neatly in black marker. Next, color each
consonant red and each vowel letter blue.
9. Use Aplpha-bits cereal pieces to make each spelling word. Paste the
cereal pieces on a piece of construction paper.
10. Scramble up all of the letters in each spelling word. Next, have a
sibling or parent try and correctly unscramble each word. Have this
person sign the bottom of your paper.
11. Divide each spelling word into syllables. For example, um/brel/la
12. Write the spelling words as word wedges. For example, B
Bo
Boo
Book
13. Write 10 of your words as “word wagons” by writing the beginning and
ending letter on each wheel and using the word as the wagon bed. For
example, cloud_/
(c) (d)
14. Write each spelling word in a “beginning letter blitz,” by writing the
word over and over to make the shape of the first letter in the word.
15. Use letter stickers to spell out the words from the spelling list.
16. Use each word from the spelling list in a complete sentence. Highlight
the spelling word used in each sentence.
17. Write your spelling words in ABC order.
18. Count how many letters are in each word. Record this number as the
bottom number in the fraction. Next, count how many vowels are in the
word. Record this number as the top number in the fraction. Also, count
how many consonants are in the word and make another fraction with this
number as your top number. Example: unkind 2/6, 4/6
19. Take a test with a parent. Have your parent sign the test when you
are finished.
20. Write each of your spelling words 5 times each.
21. Write each word in black marker. Next, choose 3 bright colored
crayons and trace over the spelling word written in black.
22. Write your spelling words in secret code. (Create your secret code
and write spelling words according to the code). Challenge a parent or
sibling to decode each word. Correct their work. For example, glad= 712-1-4.
