“The Tell-Tale Heart” p. 522 (Red textbook p. 380)
Symbolism- using images or items to represent abstract ideas or
concepts. The symbol carries a deeper meaning than the item
itself (for example: An American flag may symbolize freedom and
democracy; A dove may symbolize peace and harmony).
Project Directions:
1. Create 4 squares on your paper.
2. For two of the squares, draw the following symbols:
eye
heart
Underneath (or on the back) the symbols, write a well-constructed
paragraph that analyzes and explains the symbol’s connection to
the story or characters. Be sure to explain the deeper meaning of
the symbol. For example: The eye is a symbol for the old man’s
eye is a very literal connection. Dig deeper…what is the
significance of this eye to the narrator or reader?
3. For the other two squares, find two more symbols to connect to
the text. Do a closer reading of the text to find other objects in the
story that may represent something other than the items
themselves. Underneath, explain the symbolism and how the
images/items connect to the text and characters.
4. Use colored pencils or markers to enhance your illustrations.
