MITOSIS IN PLANT CELLS
Objective: to observe the stages of mitosis.
Reproduction of most cells in plants and animals uses mitosis and cell division. In this
activity, you will study mitosis in plant cells by examining prepared slides of onion roottip cells.
How can plant cells in different stages of mitosis be distinguished from each other?
Materials
 Prepared slide on an onion root tip
 Microscope
Safety: Wash hands thoroughly after the activity.

Procedures: (Read all procedures prior to starting the experiment)
1. Obtain a prepared slide of cells from an onion root tip.
2. Set your microscope on low power and examine the onion root tip.
Move the slide until you see the tip of the root. You will see several
large, round cells. These cells are called the root cap. Move your
slide until you see the cells in the area just behind the root cap. Turn
the nosepiece to high power.
3. Find one area of cells where you can see most stages of mitosis.
Count how many cells you see in each stage of mitosis.

4. Turn the microscope back to low power. Remove the onion root-tip
slide.
5. Complete the following statements for your inference: (use complete
sentences to answer the questions/10% off final grade if not used)
a. Compare the cells in the region behind the root cap to those in
the root cap. How are the cells in the region between the onion
root tip different from those in the root tip?
