Studio Opportunities
Megan Gilles is a member of the Music Teachers National Association(MTNA)/Minnesota
Music Teachers Association (MMTA) (local chapter-Willmar Music Teachers Association),
and the National Federation of Music Clubs, referred to as NFMC (local chapter-West
Central Music Teachers Club). Currently Megan serves as the Treasurer of the WCMTC
and the President of the WMTA. She serves as the MMTA Independent Music Teachers
Forum Chair. These organizations provide the students with the opportunity to participate
in many different performance options and workshops.
Dennis Alexander Piano Festival and Competition

The Dennis Alexander Piano Festival and Competition is an event designed to
bring students together for a variety of activities to participate in and observe. Composer
Dennis Alexander will be leading many of the activities during the day.
Registration Deadline: October 1, 2014
Date: Saturday, October 18, 2014
Where: Saint John's University, Stephen B. Humphrey building.
Cost: $25.00 for one or all of the events during the day
There are four activities for students to "opt-in" for participation. Students can elect to enter
any or all. The four activities are: Piano Competition, Festival: Collaborative Duet
Workshop and Performance, Festival: Repertoire Workshop, Festival: Dennis Alexander
Performance and Composition Demo.
Rice Health Foundation Luncheon and Table Setting Review
Selected students from the studio will perform pieces they have prepared at this formal
event from 1-2PM. The event takes place on November 15, 2014 at the Holiday Inn
Conference and Convention Center-Willmar.
Studio Recitals
There are two studio recitals held throughout the year. All students will participate in
both studio recitals.
Winter Recital at Vinje Lutheran Church-Willmar

Spring Recital at Vinje Lutheran Church-Willmar

National Federation of Music Clubs
NFMC Festival-All students will participate in festival. First year beginning students will be
evaluated by Megan to see if they are ready for participation in this. Two pieces are
memorized and performed on the piano and played for a judge who provides comments to
improve on and the positives of the musical performance. For hymn playing, students use
their music.

Cost:
Determined at festival registration time. Last year's costs were $18.00
plus the cost of music.
Minnesota Music Teachers Association
All MMTA events require registration at least six weeks prior to the event except for MMTA
Finals which is due the week following Preliminaries.
MMTA Challenge Award-Students who participate in MMTA programs will be able to take
part in earning points towards the challenge awards.
MMTA Ensemble Festival
Date: Sunday, November 9, 2014
Where: Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Montevideo
There may be two recitals depending on the number of students participating.
Cost: approx. $16.00 per ensemble (divided between players)
Family and friends are invited to attend the Ensemble Festival Concert which is free.
MMTA State Piano Contest
Date: Preliminaries are Saturday-January 24, 2015-Greater Minnesota
Saturday/Sunday-January 31/February 1, 2015-Twin Cities
Finals are Saturday/ Sunday- March 14/15, 2015 (students will choose the date)
Where: Preliminary Contest-Location choices locally are the College of St. Benedict-St.
Joseph, Southwest Minnesota State University-Marshall, New Ulm, or Alexandria.
Finals are held in the Twin Cities
Honors Concert will be June 6, 2015 with rehearsals April 18, May 2, May 16, June 6
To encourage high performance standards, MMTA sponsors an annual State Piano
Contest. Pianists with the highest scores in the Contest Finals are selected for ensemble
performance in the State Honors Contest. This concert is a gala event involving 700 young
performers playing on 20 grand pianos in ensemble groups. One piano piece is memorized
and performed for this contest. An additional piece is learned for the Honors Concert.
Cost: Approximate cost for preliminaries is $20.00 and for finals is $20.00 plus the cost
of music
MMTA Theory Exam, Music Bridges, Piano Exam
Date: Local contest-Saturday, April 11, 2015.
(Other dates and locations available around the state)
Where: First Baptist Church, Willmar, MN
Registration is due one month prior. Costs range from $16.00-$31.00.
