2005-2006 Descriptions for Issaquah Classes – Year at a Glance
EXPLORATORY CLASSES:
Exploratory Classes encourage confidence by building theatre and life skills in a fun and
encouraging environment. Developmentally appropriate exercises and activities teach
terminology and theatre skills advancement in every class. Students also learn valuable life skills
such as teamwork, creativity, collaboration, imagination, public speaking, problem solving, and
responsibility - all in a safe atmosphere where it is easy to make new friends. Classes are offered
year round and have a different theme each session. A final presentation is held on the last day of
each class.
Half Pint Players (PreK-K)
Fall – The Very Hungry Caterpiller (and other Eric Carle Stories)
Mondays 2:30-3:30 PM (10/17-12/5)
A creative approach to acting out popular literature, students explore many of Eric Carle’s
magical books and themes, create characters, and bring the stories to life.
Tuition: $120
Winter – Creative Cats and Critters
Mondays 2:30-3:30 PM (1/23-4/3)
Participants develop their own characters based on T.S. Elliot’s classic poem The Naming of Cats
and other inspiring stories. Watch as our feline fancies come to life in this fun class encouraging
creativity in each student.

Spring – Under the Sea
Mondays 2:30-3:30 PM (4/17-6/12)
An excellent hour of creative play, exploring the world of mermaids, starfish, and other creatures
under the sea.

Kinderstage (K-1)
Fall – Marvelous Monsters and Mermaids
Mondays 4:00 – 5:30 PM (10/17-12/5)
Maurice Sendak’s classic tale “Where the Wild Things Are” and the Hans Christian Anderson
Fairytale of “The Little Mermaid” are the inspiration for this class. Students use their
imaginations to make these colorful characters come to life.

Winter – Princesses, Wizards, and Knights
Mondays 4:00 – 5:30 PM (1/23-4/3)
Royalty, magic, and fairy tales. Students use their imagination and creativity while acting out
stories involving their favorite princesses, wizards, and knights.

Spring – Favorite Fairy Tales
Mondays 4:00 – 5:30 PM (4/17-6/12)
Students work together to create and perform their own fairy tales based on classics such as
Beauty and the Beast, Jack in the Beanstalk, Snow White and many more!

Fall: Adventures in Space

Beyond infinity – let’s go!! Students explore popular space culture, create original characters, and
go on adventures to galaxies far far away.

Winter: Charlotte’s Web
Tuesdays 4:00 - 5:30 PM (1/17-3/28)
The classic tale by E.B. White is the inspiration for this class. Students make the characters of this
favorite story come to life. Enter the barnyard and become Wilbur the pig, Charlotte the spider,
Templeton the rat, and more!

Spring: Stinky Cheese Man (and other John Scieszka stories)
Tuesdays 4:00 – 5:30 PM (4/18-6/6)
Rewrite, zigzag, and make riotous mockery of childhood's favorite classic fairy tales with
inspiration from Scieszka’s popular books including ‘The Stinky Cheese Man” and “The True
Story of the Three Little Pigs”. This class is a whirlwind of wacky, whimsical wisecrackers!

Acting II (Grades 3-5)
Fall: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Enter Roald Dahl’s wacky world of Willy Wonka and his magnificent chocolate factory. Students
use their imaginations to make the characters of this favorite story come to life.

Winter: Magical Characters from Narnia
Thursdays 4:00 – 5:30 PM (1/19-3/30)
Put on your fur coat and enter the magical world of Narnia. C.S. Lewis’ classic tale “The Lion,
the Witch, and the Wardrobe” is the inspiration for this mystical and unforgettable adventure.

Spring: Off the Cuff Improv
Thursdays 4:00 – 5:30 PM (4/20-6/8)
The ability to improvise takes creativity and mental flexibility and helps in all areas of student’s
lives. Creative games that explore the Who, What, Where, and Why in theatre will be introduced.
An all time favorite for the theatre student. Guaranteed fun!

Acting III (Grades 6-10)
Fall: Fantasy Villains, Heroines and Heroes
Thursdays 4:00 – 5:30 PM (10/13-12/8)
Discover the greatest fantasy villains, heroines, and heroes. Help mold and create an original
script that features characters from student’s favorite fantasy movies, plays, and books such as
J.R.R. Tolkein’s “The Lord of the Rings” and JK Rowling’s “Harry Potter.” Invent the whole
“being” behind the character, exploring voice, diction, movement, emotional expression and stage
presence.

Winter: Scenes from Movies
Thursdays 4:00 – 5:30 PM (1/19-3/30)
An advanced approach to analyzing scripts, developing characters, and investigating conflict and
resolution. Students will prepare scenes from popular movies. Advanced acting concepts
including “intentions” and “tactics” will be introduced.

Spring: Freeze! (and other Theatre Sports)
Thursdays 4:00 – 5:30 PM (4/20-6/8)
The ability to improvise takes creativity and mental flexibility and helps in all areas of students’
lives. Exploring character through improvisation is a helpful tool utilized by many directors.
Develop the whole being of the character exploring voice, movement, emotional life, character
objective, and stage presence.

MUSICAL THEATRE PERFORMANCE CLASSES:
Musical Theatre Performance Classes are for students ready to increase skills in all areas of
musical theatre. Class time includes learning music, staging, choreography, and rehearsal
terminology. Students collaborate in developing a musical revue that demonstrates their new and
developing skills. Revues are performed for family and friends at the end of the session. Students
also learn valuable life skills such as teamwork, creativity, collaboration, imagination, public
speaking, problem solving, and responsibility - all in a safe atmosphere where it is easy to make
new friends. All classes meet year round and have a different theme each session. We encourage
students to study year round.
Broadway Junior (Grades 2-3)
Fall: Scenes & Songs from Honk Jr.
Wednesdays 4:00 – 5:30 PM (10/19-12/7)
Students work in a collaborative style to develop a revue from the whimsical new musical based
on Hans Christian Anderson’s The Ugly Duckling. A ticket to the KIDSTAGE production of
Honk Jr. is provided for each enrolled student.

Winter: Scenes & Songs from Mary Poppins
Wednesdays 4:00 – 5:30 PM (1/18-3/29)
Students work in a collaborative style to develop a revue, which includes such memorable
favorites such as “A Spoonful of Sugar”, “Let’s Go Fly a Kite”, “Chim Chim Cheree,” and “Feed
the Birds.”

Spring: Scenes & Songs from The Jungle Book

Students work in a collaborative style to develop a revue which includes such memorable
favorites such as “The Bare Necessities”, “That’s What Friends are For”, “Trust in Me”, and “I
Wan’na Be Like You.”

Students work in a collaborative style to develop a revue which includes such memorable
favorites as “Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats”, “Gus the Theatre Cat”, and “Memory.”

Winter: Audition!
Tuesdays 4:00 – 6:00 PM (1/17-3/28)
Celebrating each student’s unique capability to create a memorable audition, participants will be
introduced to techniques that will strengthen their auditioning skills: monologues, 16 bars of a
song, reading sides and learning choreography. Perfect preparation for summer season auditions
in spring or for students who just want to continue fine-tuning their singing, dancing, and acting
skills.

Spring: Highlights from You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown

Students work in a collaborative style to develop a revue which includes such memorable
favorites as “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown”, “Happiness”, and “Suppertime”.

Broadway Today (Grades 7-12)
Fall: Village Theatre Season Sampler: Harmony!
Wednesdays 4:00 – 6:00 PM (10/19-12/7)
For our advanced students, this is a challenging and exciting study of some of the memorable
songs from the upcoming Village Theatre Season. Students will prepare duets, trios, quartets and
large group numbers from Once on this Island, CATS! and Hello Dolly. The skills to be
developed include acting the song, singing in harmony, and relating to characters, while also
strengthening breathing and vocal range.

For the advanced performer ready to increase skills in all areas of musical theatre. Students learn
from professionals how to fine-tune a musical performance while working in a collaborative style
on sizzling songs from the Tony award winning musical, Chicago.

Spring: Songs and Scenes from Wicked
Wednesdays 4:00 – 6:00 PM (4/19-6/7)
Foster the skills for the “triple threat” performer: singing, acting, and dancing. Students advance
their musical theatre skills and learn from professionals how to fine-tune a musical performance
will working in a collaborative style on memorable moments from the Tony award winning
musical, Wicked.

PERFECTING YOUR TECHNIQUE
We encourage our serious students to fine-tune their physical and vocal instrument by studying
the key elements that make up a triple threat performer: singing, dancing and acting. Students will
participate in developing a final performance the last day of class that allows them to demonstrate
their new and developing skills.

Dance is a key element in musical theatre. This class helps students strengthen flexibility, learn
the fundamental elements of jazz and ballet and gain the confidence necessary to move well on
stage.

Perfect for the serious student who wants to fine-tune their audition material. Class time includes
individual coaching and assistance in choosing appropriate material. At the end of the session
each student will have at least one fully prepared one- minute monologue and a new found sense
of confidence going into an audition.

Seeking singers wanting to go solo and improve their ability to harmonize in small groups.
Explore your solo voice, expand vocal range, strengthen breathing, and learn new music in a
small class of six students maximum. Each student will receive individual coaching and ensemble
instruction.

For our most advanced students who want to train at a professional level. Focus is on fine tuning
each element of a triple threat performer with an emphasis on dance. Each week guest artists will
educate students on specific theatre skills including: scene work, singing, dancing, stage combat,
dialect coaching and make-up/hair design. A special visit from Village Theatre Artistic Director,
Steve Tomkins completes this exciting new class.
Tuition: $250 (50% discount for Company Members or in conjunction with another Musical
Theatre Performance Class)
