Does the Quality of the Patient-Pharmacist Relationship Improve Medication Adherence
in Patients with Chronic Depression?

Abstract
Non-adherencetomedicationsisahugeburdenontheUnitedStateshealthcaresystemwith
costsexceeding$300billiondollarsannually.Thegoalofthisstudyistoevaluatewhetherthe
patient-pharmacistrelationshipimpactsmedicationadherenceinpatientswithchronic
depression.Thedatawascollectedfromanonlinesurveythatwasadministeredtoemployeesof
theEMCcorporation.Employeesqualifiedforthesurveyiftheyhadachronicillnessandpicked
upamedicationfortheirchronicdiseaseinthepastsixmonths,livedintheUS,andunderstood
English.Thesurveyhadasetofelevenquestionswhichfocusedonmeasuringthequalityofthe
patient-pharmacistrelationship.Thissurveydatawascomparedtomedicationclaimrecords
obtainedfromprimarypharmaciesof117eligiblepatients.Medicationadherencewascalculated
byassessinggapsinthemedicationclaimrecords.Cronbach’s alphawasusedtotestthe
reliabilityoftheeleven-questionsurveyandwasmeasuredatanexcellentscoreof0.94.The
surveyscoresrangedfrom11to55withalowerscoreindicatingapoorpatient-pharmacist
relationship.Thisstudyhighlightstheimportanceofpharmacistinteractionswithpatientsin
improvingmedicationadherence.Futureresearchshouldevaluatedifferenttechniquesto
strengthenpatient-pharmacistrelationships,aswellasclinicalendpointstoassesswhetherthe
patient-pharmacistrelationshipimproveshealthandqualityoflife.

Methods-Design
• DatawascollectedfromanonlinesurveythatwasadministeredtoemployeesoftheEMC
corporation.
• Employeesqualifiedforthesurveyiftheyhadachronicillness,pickedupamedicationfor
theirchronicdiseaseinthepastsixmonths,livedintheUS,andunderstoodEnglish.
• Participantsthatusedamailorderpharmacywereexcludedfromthestudy.
• Thesurveyhadasetofelevenquestionswhichfocusedonmeasuringthequalityofthe
patient-pharmacistrelationship.
• Medicationadherencewascalculatedbyassessingproportionofdayscovered(PDC)inthe
medicationclaimrecords.
Results/Data-SurveyQuestions
• Thissurveydatawascomparedtomedicationclaimrecordsobtainedfrom
primarypharmaciesof117eligiblepatients.
• Cronbach’s alphawasusedtotestthereliabilityoftheeleven-questionsurveyand
wasmeasuredatanexcellentscoreof0.94.
• Thesurveyscoresrangedfrom11to55withalowerscoreindicatingapoor
patient-pharmacistrelationship.

Conclusion
• Thisstudyhighlightstheimportanceofpharmacistinteractionswithpatientsin
improvingmedicationadherence.
• Futureresearchshouldevaluatedifferenttechniquestostrengthenpatientpharmacistrelationships,aswellasclinicalendpointstoassesswhetherthe
patient-pharmacistrelationshipimproveshealthandqualityoflife.
