Despite treatment advantages in this country, HIV infection continues to have a significant impact on health care effects, especially in underserved populations. This is particularly true when HIV is combined with other infections, such as tuberculosis (TB). HIV Infection: Challenges in Diverse Communities and Underserved Populations will focus on the ongoing issue of HIV infection in those who are underserved, specifically women and immigrants, in Massachusetts. Women with the HIV infection now constitute 30 percent of all HIV cases in the state, with women of color being disproportionately represented. The conference will present a new look at gendered risk and its cultural dimensions, the challenges of addiction and psychiatric disease, medical management issues, and a review of successful women-centered programs. Although both groups present unique needs, both socially and medically, co-infection with TB in the immigrant population presents a particular challenge to the medical community regarding clinical presentation, recognition, and treatment strategies. Conference topics will include risk factors, tuberculosis therapy, potential drug interaction with highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART), and evolving issues such as multidrug resistance in tuberculosis. TARGET AUDIENCE: All HIV/AIDS healthcare providers PROGRAM GOAL: To examine the challenges of HIV care in diverse populations and health care issues unique to women with HIV infection. To explore the intersection of HIV disease with tuberculosis and provide strategies to optimize delivery of care with special attention to cultural, mental health, and substance abuse issues. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: • To provide an overview of the dramatic incidence of HIV/TB co-infection worldwide and the complications of the HIV/TB co-infected patient • To illustrate the challenges of treating HIV infection in diverse communities • To explain the gender risks factors, clinical management, and impact of successful treatment programs for HIV-infected women • To present mental health and substance abuse issues as they pertain to culturally diverse populations PROGRAM SCHEDULE: 7:30 AM REGISTRATION & CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST 8:30 AM WELCOME & INTRODUCTION PAUL D.
