Chapter 2: Linear Equations and Inequalities
2.2: Solving Multistep Equations
Goal: Learn how to isolate the variable in an equation by performing more than one
inverse operation on both sides of the equation then solve the equation.
Homework: Worksheet
Solving Equations with Two Arithmetic Operations
In equations in which the variable is involved in two different arithmetic operations,
isolate the variable by undoing any addition or subtraction before undoing any
multiplication or division.
Example 1
Find the solutions set of
3x-5=22
Example 2
Solve for y and check
y
 2  13

Chapter 2: Linear Equations and Inequalities
2.2: Solving Multistep Equations
Solving Equations with Parentheses
If an equation contains parentheses, remove the parentheses using the distributive
property.
Example 5
Solve for x and check:
3(1-2x)+8=-13
Do Now Problems: Solve the question corresponding to your group number to present to
the class. When you are finished, work on the rest of the questions.
