MetallicnanoparticlesemitAugerelectronsandphotoelectronsupon
exposuretoX-rays.Whenselectivelydeliveredtotumors,these
nanoparticlescanlocallyenhancetheeffectsofradiationtherapy.
Previousinvitroworkhasprimarilystudiedtheeffectivenessof
nanoparticle-enhancedtherapy,withoutelucidatingtheunderlying
biologicalmechanisms1,2.Theobjectiveofthisprojectistodetermine
whatbiologicalpathwaysareactivatedinirradiatedpancreaticcancercells
pre-treatedwithgoldnanoparticles. Usingacombinationofclonogenic
survivalassaysandWesternblotting,itwasdeterminedthatgold
nanoparticlesenhancetheeffectsofradiationatclinicallyrelevantlevels
viaupregulation ordownregulation ofspecificpathways.
