National Patient Safety Awareness Week is March 2-8th
This year, National Patient Safety Awareness Week is March 2-8th. Once again, Fletcher Allen Health
Care will be joining with the National Patient Safety Foundation and many other healthcare organizations
across the United States to raise awareness of and celebrate Patient Safety. Among many other activities,
we are also extremely fortunate to be able to bring some nationally recognized speakers to Fletcher Allen.
On Wednesday, March 5th, Mr. Christopher Jerry, Nathaniel Sims MD, and Wes McMillian PharmD will
present: “The Emily Jerry story: preventing tomorrow’s tragedies with today’s technology.”
Christopher Jerry is a father whose beautiful 2 year old daughter Emily died after a medication error
occurred at a hospital in Ohio in 2006. Since then, he has dedicated his life to raising awareness of the
need for pharmacy technician oversight and regulation, as well as the adoption and implementation of
technology to reduce the probability of human error in medication administration. His foundation The
Emily Jerry Foundation http://emilyjerryfoundation.org/ endeavors to find solutions to ensure that no
other parent has to suffer the grief of losing a child to medical error. Mr. Jerry will be joined by Dr.
Nathaniel Sims, an Anesthesiologist from Massachusetts General Hospital and inventor of the “smart
pump.” The “smart pump” has transformed how medications are delivered across the world and is one of
the greatest safety innovations of our time. Dr. Sims and Mr. Jerry will share their stories and discuss
how technology can be used to reduce variation and promote safety. Wes McMillian, PharmD, Manager
of Clinical Pharmacy Practice and Director, PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency at Fletcher Allen
will also be joining them to discuss the technology in use in the Pharmacy at Fletcher Allen and how this
has contributed to safer care. See the schedule below.
