Youth, Radicalization and Disengagement in Scandinavia
Copenhagen 25 September 2009
Background
In the aftermath of the events of 9-11 in 2001, and particularly since the attacks on the Madrid
and London transport systems in 2005 European governments and others have concerned
themselves with the “problem of radicalisation,” expending tremendous energy and resources in
instituting programmes of de-radicalisation, and counter-radicalisation. Yet in regards to
processes of radicalisation among youth, few have asked what we actually know, and what we
do not know, what are the end goals of the de-radicalisation programs, and what could be the
reasons for disengagement of individuals and groups?
To explore some of these questions and to further a dialogue among those who are engaging the
many complex aspects of radicalisation, we invite you to participate in the conference “Youth,
Radicalisation and Disengagement in Scandinavia” together with other researchers and
practitioners within the field.
During three sessions the participants will discuss the research explorations and direct
engagements conducted both by academics and others. The goal is to assemble a more
comprehensive picture of both the research into and the professional work conducted within the
field of highly mobilised youth across various social and political positions and movements. To
further this goal, we hope that you will participate actively and engage in the discussions with
your knowledge.
The conference is part of “European Study on Youth Mobilisation (ESYM)”, a research project
conducted by St. Andrews and British Council, exploring the social and political activity among
15 to 30 year olds in selected European countries.
