The proposed center will investigate relationships between personal behavior patterns (e.g.,
substance abuse, sedentary lifestyle, medication non-adherence) and risk for chronic disease
and premature death. The overarching focus will be on developing and evaluating clinical
interventions for these risk behaviors and examining biases in decision-making and other
potential mechanisms underpinning vulnerability to unhealthy behavior patterns using a
behavioral economic conceptual framework.

“Determinants of Adolescent Exercise Behavior: Towards Evidence-Based Intervention”
This application proposes a combined survey, laboratory, and intervention study using the
unique data collection in the Netherlands Twin Register (NTR) with longitudinal assessment of
exercise behavior and many of its potential (environmental) moderators at ages 7, 9, 12, 14,
16, and 18. It aims to determine the causes of individual differences in voluntary exercise
behavior from childhood to young adulthood and use this information to develop a novel
family-based E-intervention program to change exercise behavior in young adolescents.
