Research Profile Asper School of Business> B eginning as a small department in 1937, the Asper School of Business has grown into a major research and teaching unit with more than 60 full-time staff and approximately 1800 students at the bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. levels. A variety of disciplines are contained within the research-active departments and centres composing the Asper School of Business: the Department of Accounting & Finance, the Department of Marketing, the Department of Supply Chain Management the Department of Business Administration, and the Warren Centre for Actuarial Studies and Research. The faculty’s research is recognized not only throughout Canada, but in the international arena as well. Research Activities Research in the accounting area includes standardsetting and international convergence, auditor judgment, audit regulation, political uncertainty, dividend policy, bankruptcy and fraud prediction using neural networks, the costing of health care in Manitoba, voluntary disclosure, family business and tax planning. Research in the finance area includes corporate and international finance, valuation, agency theory, cost of capital, asset pricing, corporate governance, market microstructure, financial institutions, behavioral finance, and consumer finance. Specific interests include fixed-income securities, initial and seasoned public offerings, security analyst’s forecasts, market segmentation, market timing, corporate ethics, anomalies and information quality. Researchers in marketing are studying such issues as: market orientation and knowledge development; the relationship between market and entrepreneurial orientation and firm performance; consumer learning and knowledge transfer across cognitive domains; how the age of the consumer affects the impact of advertising; the social impact of idealized images in advertising; cross-cultural consumer behavior; the impact of suspicion on how consumers respond to product performance claims; the effects of anti-smoking messages; consumer outcomes as a result of experiencing negative emotions; and issues related to new venture formation, small firm niche strategy and family business. Research focus in the area of supply chain management (SCM) includes: humanitarian (not-for-profit; interrupted environment) logistics; Bringing Research to Life umanitoba.ca/research asper.indd 1 09-12-15 3:33 PM Research Profile effect of gender on salaries of supply chain professionals; a historical look at the grain supply chain in Western Canada; the implications of cabotage restrictions on North American motor carriage; and the export of Canadian goods to Mexico. Additional research projects at the Transport Institute include: Manitoba food supply under pandemic conditions; the economic feasibility/environmental impact of hydrogen as an alternative fuel; and the annual Manitoba Transportation Report. In the area of business administration, researchers examine a wide range of issues including: organizational change and conflict management; well-being in the workplace; work role socialization; workplace aggression; collective bargaining, expatriate adjustment; emotional labour; and diversity issues. Recent studies have considered a diverse range of issues including workplace reform programs, organizational break-ups, and the selection, adjustment and reintegration of expatriate employees. Researchers in the Warren Centre are studying such issues: as life and health insurance; pensions; employee benefits; property and casualty insurance; ratemaking and reserves; risk management and risk modeling; quantitative risk analysis; demographic trends and survival analysis; reinsurance; and issues related to finance and investments; practical business and societal problems; new and developing areas of actuarial practice; technology improvements; and emerging public policy debates. Research Collaborations and Resources The Asper School of Business provides support for faculty research. Each year faculty and PhD students present a variety of seminars,which provide opportunity for Asper members to share their research results, and to exchange ideas with one another. Douglas Professorship in Corporate Finance, the F. Ross Johnson Professorship in Marketing, the Stuart Clark Professorship in Financial Management, the L.A.H. Warren Chair in Actuarial Studies, and the David Dreman Professorship in Behavioural Finance. Research Facilities Externally funded research centres support ongoing research programs in the Asper School of Business. The Centre for Accounting Research and Education provides data, library, and other resources to enhance teaching and research in accounting. Located within the Department of Accounting and Finance, the centre provides funding for the acquisition of large financial databases, and provides awards for successful accounting researchers. The Marketing Research Lab is fitted with customized computer workstations to conduct computerized marketing simulations and for conducting in-depth interviews, focus group sessions, and screening of advertisements. Graduate Training Opportunities The Asper School of Business offers graduate students several opportunities for research training. The M.Sc. in Management offers business research education, with an emphasis on research methodology, which aims to develop strong academically-qualified master’s candidates who are prepared to do further work at the doctoral level.
