CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) In this applied research project, CCAFS is working with USAID to identify opportunities and approaches to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions related to agriculture and food security. This action research project partners with USAID incountry missions, UN FAO, Imaflora, International Food Policy Research Institute, and Woods Hole Research Center. • Low Emissions Development Strategies. Analyzed options for low emissions agriculture that complement or provide alternatives to USAID current agricultural investments. • Agricultural GHG Emission Estimation. Conducted research into methods and tools to improve estimates and projections of agricultural GHG emissions. Applied geospatial and econometric methods to evaluate innovation systems for scaling up low emissions agriculture. Project Partner. Sustainable Pearls. The Sustainable Pearl project is based at the University of Vermont and incorporates an interdisciplinary team from the United States, Switzerland, Japan, Mexico, and Australia. The project website is www.sustainablepearls.org. • Sustainability Standards and Indicators. Studied sustainable resource management strategies in the marine cultured-pearl industry and devised sustainability principles in collaboration with pearl farmers and a global research team. Coordinated pearl-producers roundtable to demonstrate industry-wide support for sustainability principles. • Private Governance Initiatives and Environmental Collaborations. Analyzed governance network implications of environmental collaborations (roundtables, consumer transparency initiatives and third-party certifications) including small producer participation and revenue re-distribution. Sustainable Development. Studied the social, economic, and ecological interactions between marine cultured-pearl farming, sustainable livelihoods, and coral reef conservation. Project findings and environmental governance recommendations presented at two marine-cultured pearl industry stakeholder meetings -February 2014 in Munich and June 2014 in Hong Kong. • Researcher and Co-Author. Vermont Climate Assessment. Conducted research on the challenges related to global climate change in the Vermont food system. Developed agriculture-specific climate change impact assessments to increase awareness of business risks and opportunities. Created an interpretive narrative synthesis to distill the data into accessible frameworks and draw attention to adaptation strategies.
