PREREQUISITES: Math 222 and Math 273 each with a grade of C or better. TEXT: A Friendly Introduction to Analysis: Single and Multivariable, 2nd Edition, by Witold A. J. Kosmala. COURSE DESCRIPTION: In Real Analysis, we study the theory behind calculus, differential equations, and probability. These topics are an essential foundation of graduate studies in science, statistics, engineering, computer science, economics and business. In this course, we study the fundamental concepts of analysis including properties of real numbers, sequences and series, continuity and limits, differentiation and integration. An emphasis will be placed on abstract theory and methods of proof. The main aim of this course is to develop the student's ability to construct and present rigorous mathematical arguments. We will cover selected topics from the following chapters of the text: Chapter 1: Chapter 2: Chapter 3: Chapter 4: Chapter 5: Chapter 6: Chapter 7: Chapter 8: Introduction Sequences Limits of Functions Continuity Differentiation Integration Infinite Series Sequences and Series of Functions ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students are expected to attend class regularly, take an active part in class discussions and do the assigned work. If you miss a class, you are responsible for all assignments and announcements made on that day. It is recommended that you read the sections to be covered in class before the lecture. You are responsible for material covered in class as well as material from the text, which is assigned but not covered in class. Lecture time is at a premium; you cannot be taught everything in class. It is your responsibility to learn the material; the instructor's job is to guide you in your learning. You are also responsible to be aware of any changes to the syllabus which may be announced in class. EXAMS: There will be 3 exams. Dates of exams will be announced a week in advance. HOMEWORK/ASSIGNMENTS: Homework/Assignments will be assigned regularly throughout the semester. Doing problems is essential to succeed in this course. You are allowed to work together on homework problems. Working together does not mean copying assignments from someone else. It means discussing with each other ideas and techniques for solving problems. Students are expected to write up the assignment in their own words. Homework will be regularly collected for grading.
