S PRING 2016 67-109 E LEMENTARY S TATISTICS S ECTION 091 I NSTRUCTOR : Dr. Ju Youn Bae [email protected] P REREQUISITE : 67-103 with a grace of C or better of placement C OURSE A study of topics which includes descriptive statistics and data anal- D ESCRIPTION ysis, elementary probability, binomial and normal probability distributions, the Central Limit Theorem, confidence intervals, elementary hypothesis testing, linear regression and correlation. A major goal of this course is an application of these topics to problems arising from the natural sciences, the social sciences, the health industry, and the business environment. L EARNING O BJECTIVES : Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to 1. use analytical skills to research, interpret, and evaluate statistical data. 2. perform basic calculations involving probability and statistics. 3. use appropriate language specific to statistics. 4. employ and interpret statistical graphs. 5. use logical and analytical thought processes to solve complex problems involving interpretation, evaluation, analysis and inference. 6. demonstrate the ability to solve real-life applications of probability and statistics. 1 T EXTBOOK AND M ATERI - ALS : 1. C OURSE This course will be completely on-line via Desire2Learn (D2L) and E XPECTA - MyStatLab. TIONS : respond on-line as required, having read or prepared the assigned Students will be expected to log-in to the class and material and actively participate. Active participation on-line also includes reading other student entries and instructor responses. Except in cases of emergency, or unless prior arrangements are made with the instructor, homework, quizzes, tests, participation in discussions are due as indicated on the schedule: late assignments will not be accepted. The homework problems will be similar to problems from your textbook. Each week you will get new homework assignments that will be due by the end of the week on Saturday. These problems can be worked on until you get them correct with no time limit. Please pay attention to the due dates for the homework assignments. 3 Q UIZZES : There will also be assigned quizzes at the end of each chapter on MyStatLab. You will get 90 min to take a quiz and can only take it one time. For your quizzes you can use all your notes, textbook, and calculator. Please pay attention to the due dates for the quizzes. T ESTS : There will be two proctored tests given through MyStatLab. You are responsible for identifying a test proctor, and you must do this within the first week of class. Use the Proctor Approval Form provided in the content section of D2L. This form will need to be filled out and submitted to the instructor, who will then provide the proctor with the passwords for the tests. The completed form can be submitted by emailing (scan the form and attach it at [email protected]), faxing at 920-424-1812 to Dr. Ju Youn Bae, or using the postal service (send to Dr. Ju Youn Bae, Department of Mathematics, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Oshkosh, WI 54901). If students decide to take the tests in the UWO testing center, students can simply email to the instructor stating that the test will be taken at UWO Testing Center. In this case, students are no need to fill out the Proctor Approval Form. The instructor will send the passwords for the tests to UWO Testing center and will reserve the spots for the students who are planning to take it at the testing center. There will be no make-up tests given except under special circumstances and prior notice. The tests are multiple-choice and you will have two hours for each test. Tests will due by 11:59 p.m. on the due date. Department policy allows the use of TI 83, 83 Plus, 84 or 84 Plus calculators during the tests. The TI-89, TI-92, cell phones, or other electronic devices will NOT be permitted on tests.
