Content files, or Binary Large Objects (BLOBs), such as presentations, PDFs and
images weigh heavily on Microsoft SharePoint database performance. To address
this problem, externalizing or storing BLOBs outside the Microsoft SQL Server
database can enable enterprises to optimize the performance of their SharePoint
environment, while increasing scalability and reducing infrastructure costs.

environment. Based on Metalogix StoragePoint software and EMC Isilon® scale-out

ENVIRONMENT
Managing large data files, especially individual files over 2 GB in size, can be very
difficult in a SharePoint environment. With the SharePoint BLOB storage solution
from Metalogix and EMC Isilon, managing large data files is extremely easy.
Metalogix StoragePoint works natively with SharePoint. StoragePoint is a .NET
application that adheres to the SharePoint Object Model and uses the standard
Microsoft Remote BLOB Storage (RBS) and External BLOB Storage (EBS) interfaces.
EMC Isilon storage systems provide massive scalability to meet your growing
SharePoint data storage requirements. Isilon systems scale easily from a minimum
three-node cluster configuration that provides 18TB of storage capacity up to a 144
node cluster that provides 20 PB of storage capacity. Nodes can be added to an
existing Isilon cluster quickly, typically in less than a minute. As a result, you can
easily scale capacity on a grow-as-you-go basis and thereby avoid over-provisioning
of storage resources.

SIMPLIFY MANAGEMENT
To mitigate slow performance due to large amounts of content, some organizations
split their SharePoint content databases. However, splitting SharePoint databases
can increase management complexity and result in additional license and other
related costs. Metalogix StoragePoint eliminates the need to split SharePoint
databases to maintain performance by shrinking content databases by 95% or
more. And you can configure and monitor StoragePoint easily with the familiar
Central Administration interface.
Isilon scale-out NAS is based on an easy-to-manage, single file system, single
volume architecture approach. As a result, Isilon storage systems are simple to
install and easy to use. The EMC Isilon OneFS® operating system also incorporates a
number of automated features that further simplify storage management. For
example, Isilon AutoBalance™ automatically distributes data uniformly across all of
the nodes in an Isilon cluster. When new storage nodes are added to the cluster,
data is automatically moved to the new storage nodes while the system is online
and in production. This eliminates “hot spots” and reduces costs, complexity, and
risks for scaling storage.
INCREASE EFFICIENCY AND REDUCE COSTS
Microsoft SharePoint typically stores multiple copies of the same BLOB if it’s
referenced in more than one SharePoint library, which consumes storage that could
be used for other purposes. Metalogix StoragePoint software recognizes these
duplicates and will store only one copy of the BLOB no matter how many times it’s
referenced in SharePoint. This single instancing capability significantly improves
storage efficiency.
In those cases where BLOB data is not externalized, Microsoft's SharePoint SQL
Server stores all BLOBs on Tier 1 block storage which can be very expensive. The
Metalogix and EMC Isilon solution enables SharePoint to store BLOBs on highly
efficient, cost-effective Isilon scale-out. With over 80 percent storage utilization,
Isilon offers compelling economies of scale for large and growing SharePoint
environments.
To further optimize your BLOB storage resources, Isilon SmartPools™ software,
allows you to implement an automated storage tiering infrastructure using a policybased approach.
