ECE – 590 I POWER & ENERGY SYSTEMS SEMINAR Monday, April 25, 2016, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m., Room 2017, ECEB State of Charge Indicator (SOCI) Design for the Lithium Carbon Monofluoride (Li-CFx) Battery Dr. Edward J William Jr Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) Abstract The lithium polycarbon monoflouride (Li/CFx) battery has dynamic environmental conditions, such as the ambient temperature history. The current SOCI technology has a problem with flat discharge curves where state of charge (SOC) is a function of voltage (V). The intended usage of the SOCI is for monitoring military cells, with extension to any battery with flat discharge profile. This paper provides a solution for monitoring this Li/CFx discharge behavior. This nonlinear solution is achieved in the form of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) algorithm. This paper will take an indepth look into the ANN algorithm and how it will be trained. Moreover, the trained ANNbased algorithm will be programmed into a MSP430 microcontroller and will improve nonlinear discharge SOCI accuracy. This solution is estimated to be successful in giving us an approximate SOC within 2– 3% margin of error. Moreover, this paper provides a scientific contribution in the form of a correction to internal resistance equation, Li/CFx battery mathematical model, SOCI prototype, and cost analysis. The SOCI is composed of circuit, ANN algorithm, MSP430 microcontroller, and a five lightemitting diode (LED) output display. Its output display will function as a SOCI that shows five initiated LEDs that demonstrate a 100% fully charged Li/CFx battery. The SOCI will adjust the engaged LED display proportionally as battery discharges, and finally all LEDs will be disengaged to demonstrate the battery is discharged at 0%.
