Speakers Summit and Workshop Leads Spencer Hinkle CKD, Department chair of the PCC Building Construction Department. He is also one of the principal investigators for "Framing Student Success," a National Science Foundation Advance Technological Education grant. He has 20 years experience in the remodeling and cabinetry industry. He recently authored a Construction Mathematics book that is used as a textbook at PCC and other schools. He received the Staff Excellence Award in 1998 from US Bank and PCC, Educator of the Year Award in 2004 from the Oregon Building Congress and the Galbraith Award in 2006 from Portland Community College. Spencer is a certified kitchen designer; he earned a two-year degree in Building Construction Technology from PCC and a B.A. from the University of South Florida. Larry Flick, PhD is chair of the department of Science and Mathematics Education at Oregon State University. Dr. Flick holds a B.S. in electrical engineering from Purdue, an MAT from Northwestern University, and a PhD in science education from Indiana University. He is a principal investigator for "Framing Student Success." He worked as an engineer in the telephone industry. He taught middle level science for 13 years. His work at OSU has involved research on student concept development and teaching strategies that foster inquiry and higher order thinking. He is co-editor of the book Scientific Inquiry and Nature of Science: Implications for Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education published by Pearson. He has been president of the Association of Science Teacher Education an international organization of science teacher educators. Noelle Studer, M.S., M.P.A., is Portland Community College’s Sustainability Coordinator. Ms. Studer has 17 years experience in resource conservation and organizational change in public agencies in the U.S. and abroad. She currently coordinates a National Science Foundation Advance Technological Education grant to identify workforce training needs related to green building and gather resources that instructors can use for innovation. She leads PCC’s Sustainability Initiative, which is comprised of students, staff, and faculty from five campuses. In the past year members have inventoried PCC’s carbon dioxide emissions (01-06), reduced solid waste, started a learning garden, held six discussion groups & numerous awareness events, and were awarded a DEQ grant to start a vermicomposting project at PCC Rock Creek. Workshop Presenters Carrington Barrs, of Barrs & Genauer Construction, provides construction management, general contracting and consulting services to the commercial building industry with an emphasis on sustainable building techniques. As a hands-on project manager, Carrington is responsible for all elements of project management: scheduling, budgeting, quality control, personnel and subcontractor management as well as safety. He also serves as a resource for creative problem solving and solid communication throughout the project, working well with owners, end users, community members, architects, consultants, suppliers and subcontractors. Dan Cote, Field and Technical Manager for the ENERGY STAR® New Homes Program of Energy Trust of Oregon. Dan Cote is a Building Science Specialist with extensive experience in building science and technologies, residential construction, and energy efficiency. Dan works directly with builders and developers to facilitate the adoption of ENERGY STAR® Homes standards through in field training, education and site inspections.
