If you have any questions, please direct them to Irish McClung at [email protected]* PHARMACY AREA AREA DESCRIPTION The Johns Hopkins Hospital Central Pharmacy Johns Hopkins Hospital On-site/ Non-administrative The Central Pharmacy is an inpatient pharmacy production area that serves all patient populations and includes Cart Fill for adult patients only, Sterile compounding preparations (i.e., IV bags), Pyxis refills for over 300 MedStations, Non sterile compounding (i.e., unit dose). Critical Care/Surgery Inpatient Pharmacy In the Critical Care/Surgery (CCS) Inpatient Pharmacy, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians Johns Hopkins Hospital care for critical care adults in 5 different ICUs, solid organ transplant patients and patients in On-site/ the operating rooms within the hospital. Non-administrative Adult Inpatient Pharmacy Johns Hopkins Hospital On-site/ Non-administrative In the Adult Inpatient Pharmacy (AIP), pharmacists and pharmacy technicians care for a wide variety of patients, including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, Obstetrics, Rehabilitation, Ophthalmology, and the Adult Emergency Room. The Pediatric Pharmacy services the 205 bed acute care JHH Children's Center as well as the Pediatric Inpatient Pharmacy neighboring Kennedy Krieger Institute, a pediatric rehabilitation center. This includes a wide Johns Hopkins Hospital variety of patient populations, including general pediatric medical/surgical, trauma, burn, solid On-site/ organ transplant, PICU, NICU, psychiatry, oncology and BMT patients. The Pediatric Pharmacy Non-administrative provides clinical as well as distributive services, and dispenses more than 1 million pediatric unit-doses annually. The Weinberg Pharmacy services approximately 140 acute care beds and two high-volume Weinberg Inpatient Pharmacy Johns Hopkins Hospital On-site/ Non-administrative outpatient oncology infusion centers. The acute care patient areas include surgery, medical oncology, benign hematology, hematologic malignancies and bone marrow transplantation. The primary outpatient infusion center (OPD) cares for approximately 150-200 patients per day with a variety of malignancies. The inpatient/outpatient (IPOP) infusion center cares for 50 patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation in a highly innovative outpatient practice. Additionally, the Oncology Investigational Drug Service supports 400 to 500 trials within the various practice settings. PHARMACY AREA Medication Quality and Outcomes Johns Hopkins Hospital On-site/ Administrative AREA DESCRIPTION The Center for Medication Quality and Outcomes conducts applied outcomes research and pharmacoepidemiologic studies to enhance the quality and safety of patient care and to improve patient outcomes. The intern will assist in ongoing studies and gain experience in all aspects of applying science to healthcare delivery. The Investigational Drug Service (IDS) pharmacy supports clinical research for Johns Hopkins Investigational Drug Services Medicine. IDS coordinates and provides expertise in support of clinical investigational drug Johns Hopkins Hospital trials. The intern will be introduced to the basic concept of clinical drug trials, state and federal On-site/ regulations and the professional practice of IDS through experiential learning activities and Non-administrative assignments, including: dispensing investigational drugs, counseling research subjects, managing drug returns, reading and summarizing the protocols and other ad-hoc projects. Ambulatory and Care Transitions The Ambulatory and Care Transitions Division oversees drug distribution and clinical pharmacy services in ambulatory care areas. The Division is also involved in the development, On Site/Combination implementation, and optimization of transitions of care and readmission reduction efforts Administrative and Non- across the health system. The intern will be engaged in a wide variety of projects in operations, Administrative clinical management, and quality improvement. . This experience will provide the student pharmacist the opportunity to participate in the Pharmacy Administration Johns Hopkins Hospital On-site/ Administrative provision and evaluation of clinical pharmacy programs and services, to support drug policy initiatives through the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, to participate in strategic planning initiatives, and to participate in decision making through committee involvement. Working closely with the Associate Director for Decentralized & Clinical Pharmacy Services, the participant will complete projects that support and enhance patient care services ranging from the acute care, ambulatory care and care transitions environments. . Education Training and The Education Division of the Department of Pharmacy is responsible for the orientation and Personnel Development training of new employees and the ongoing education of pharmacy staff. Pharmacy Educators Johns Hopkins Hospital provide in-services and other hands-on training for new policies, drug therapies, and other On-site – 2010 Building/ pharmacy-related activities. Interns will assist with activities relating to student APPE/IPPE Administrative rotations, residency training, continuing education and staff development. The Johns Hopkins Homecare Group Bayview & Howard County Howard County Outpatient Pharmacy provides an opportunity to observe marketing and Outpatient Pharmacy managing growth of a new pharmacy. Located in the Medical Pavilion at Howard County, the Home Care Group pharmacy works closely with private specialists and Howard County General Hospital. The Off-site – Howard County General/ Non-administrative Intern will be able to observe entire prescription filling process, assist with specialty medication services, perform marketing tasks and communicate with physicians. . The Johns Hopkins Outpatient Pharmacy at the Arcade is situated between the Zayed critical Arcade Outpatient Pharmacy care and Bloomberg pediatrics towers. This pharmacy provides services to patients being Home Care Group discharged from the hospital and emergency department; with a large number of pediatric On-site/ prescriptions, which require specialty compounding. This pharmacy also provides specialty Non-administrative formulations for the patients of the Wilmer Eye Clinic that otherwise would not be available outside of the hospital. Moore Outpatient Pharmacy The Moore Outpatient Pharmacy is a specialty retail pharmacy in a clinical setting. Over 98% Home Care Group of our prescription volume pertains to HIV/AIDS related medications. Most of our patients are On-site/ referred to us from the Moore Clinic and the Baltimore City Health Departments, as well as Non-administrative Weinberg Outpatient Pharmacy Home Care Group On-site/ Non-administrative discharge patients. The Outpatient Pharmacy at the Weinberg Center fills prescriptions for oncology patients treated at the Outpatient Clinics as well as patients being discharged from the Weinberg tower of The Johns Hopkins Hospital. This pharmacy dispenses a large variety of oral chemotherapy and supportive treatments for patients living with cancer. The Medication Safety Officer works on quality improvement initiatives within the outpatient Medication Use Safety Home Care Group Off-site – Holabird Avenue/ Administrative pharmacies and infusion pharmacy in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Home Care Group quality department. Such initiatives include analyzing medication errors and completing performance improvement projects using tools such as root cause analysis and failure mode and effects analysis along with monthly auditing and assessment of safety objectives in the pharmacies. In addition, this internship includes monitoring recalled medications and attending various regularly scheduled safety meetings within the health system. Outpatient Pharmacy Outpatient Pharmacy Administration is part of a cross functional team consisting of Administration pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, human resource employees, information technology Home Care Group experts, finance representatives, and support service representatives, who work in a Off-site – Holabird Avenue/ collaborative practice to support outpatient pharmacy teams that provide dispensing and Administrative medication management services to the patients of Johns Hopkins Medicine. Home Care Group, The Outpatient Pharmacy Education Manager coordinates orientation, education, and training Training Coordinator for new employees and the ongoing education of current Outpatient Pharmacy staff in all areas Off-site – Holabird Avenue/ of operations, policies, and procedures. Additional responsibilities include developing and Administrative maintaining standard operating procedures set forth for the seven outpatient pharmacies. Working with the clinical coordinators, who are a group of pharmacists that focus on Home Care Group Off-site – Holabird Avenue/ Administrative development, training, and maintaining clinical programs within the outpatient pharmacies. Pharmacists provide direct patient care including MTM and disease state management for specific patient populations. In addition, the clinical coordinators provide education to the pharmacy staff regarding new drug therapies or clinical programs. They also work very closely with the JHHCG PGY1 Community Residency Pharmacy program. Pharmaquip Infusion Services Home Care Group Off-site – Holabird Avenue/ Non-administrative Pharmaquip Infusion Services is a specialty pharmacy providing safe and effective infusion therapies to patients at home. All sterile admixture products (TPN, antibiotics, chemotherapy, hydration, pain management, etc.) are compounded in a USP 797 compliance clean room environment. Bayview Medical Center Pharmacy Administration Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center Off-site—Bayview Medical Center/ Working with the Assistant Director of Pharmacy and Pharmacy Administrative team on administrative projects. Intern will work on financial, operational, technology optimization, and administrative projects based on current departmental initiatives.
