Friedman $13,360 The primary objective of this exploratory grant is to examine the use of consanguineous pedigrees for quantitative trait mapping and to perform initial gene mapping studies for selected quantitative traits that are significant risk factors for common ocular complex disorders. A longterm goal is to use this approach to develop and support a genotype/phenotype database resource that will enable investigators to discover, assess and validate genes and biomarkers responsible for quantitative traits that contribute to complex human ocular disease. Dr. Friedman will supervise the collection of data on ocular phenotypes for this research. 09/30/09-09/29/11 National Vision Preservation Initiative 1 U58DP001311 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) PI: Todd JHU PI: Friedman $114,286 This project has two components: a programmatic part that will screen for and treat eye diseases among underserved adults and children in the United States, and a research effort to determine the best approaches for carrying out these activities. Dr. Friedman is the PI for the research component in adults and is the JHU PI supervising activities which include designing, implementing and disseminating the findings of the research. 09/30/09-09/29/11 Comparative Effectiveness & Medical Interventions for Primary Open Angle Glaucoma 1RC1EY020140 National Eye Institute (NEI) PI: Dickersin JHU PI: $272,645 The overall objective of this project is to assess the comparative effectiveness of multiple medical interventions available for primary open angle glaucoma using mixed treatment comparison meta-analysis. This required component of the MD curriculum provides the infrastructure and mentoring necessary for students to produce a scholarly project, and encourages the acquisition of attitudes and skills for self-directed, lifelong learning and scholarship. COURSE OBJECTIVES The objective of the SC program is to promote intellectual curiosity, appreciation of scholarly inquiry, flexibility, passion for discovery, self-reflection, openness, independence, and acceptance of one’s own limitations. Students will use critical thinking, independent and group work, observational skills, and written and oral presentation to achieve these objectives. Throughout the process, each student will receive feedback from faculty and other students.
