Web Publishing Tips
General Guidelines
Be Organized! Be Organized! Be Organized!
Save in Correct folders.
o Create main folder (myweb) & sub-folders (images), (PDF), (PowerPoint) and other (folders as needed).
o Keep web pages in the myweb folder.
o Keep any documents not being published outside the myweb folder.
o Keep all images in the images folder.
o Keep PDF files in PDF folder.
o Keep Video files in Video folder.
Save the home page as index.htm
Try not to move things after they are Hyperlinked.
Save files using the 8.3 rule of thumb with No Special Characters. (Ex: broucher.pdf)

Movies or Photo Story
There are several ways to save these types of files but for our class
we will be saving all of them as a PDF file before linking and
publishing.
Move the file(s) into a separate folder inside your myweb folder.
Name the file(s) with the 8.3 Rule of Thumb and Hyperlink it to the
appropriate title on your Portfolio Index page.
PowerPoint
There are 3 main ways to publish a PowerPoint document
1. Publish the actual PowerPoint
The person viewing the presentation must have PowerPoint or
PowerPoint Viewer on their computer.
2. Convert the PowerPoint to a PDF file
Anyone can view the individual slides with the PDF viewer but all
transitions and animations are lost.
3. Convert the PowerPoint to an HTML file
If you use the MS Internet Explorer Browser you can view the
HTML page as if it was in PowerPoint. Using other browsers may
create undesired results.
Graphics
.gif – “The Graphics Interchange Format”
Use for simple graphic images
.jpg – "Joint Photographic Experts Group."
Use or photographs
.png – “Portable Network Graphic."
Do not use for our websites
A bitmap image format that was introduced by CompuServe in
1987 and has since come into widespread usage on the World
Wide Web due to its wide support and portability.
The format supports up to 8 bits per pixel allowing a single
image to reference a palette of up to 256 distinct colors chosen
from the 24-bit RGB color space. It also supports animations
and allows a separate palette of 256 colors for each frame. The
color limitation makes the GIF format unsuitable for
reproducing color photographs and other images with
continuous color, but it is well-suited for simpler images such
as graphics or logos with solid areas of color.
A standardized image compression mechanism. JPG is
designed for compressing either full color or gray-scale images
of natural, real-world scenes. It works well on photographs,
naturalistic artwork, and similar material; not so well on lettering,
simple cartoons, or line drawings. JPG handles only still images,
but there is a related standard called MPEG for motion pictures.
It is a versatile image compression format which is not as
widely supported by browsers as GIF or JPEG.
It is designed as the successor to GIF. It features compression,
transparency, and progressive loading, like GIF but it is free of
patent restrictions.
However, they do not support animations like GIFs do. A
format similar to PNG, called MNG, is currently under
development, and should support animations.
