Maternal Fetal Medicine Selective @ Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, Inc. Description: Maternal fetal medicine is the branch of obstetrics that focuses on the medical and surgical management of high-risk pregnancies. Students assigned to the MFM selective will be assigned to outpatient clinics encompassing the full range of MFM practice including preconception and genetic counseling, antepartum care of pregnancies complicated by medical disease or fetal problems, prenatal diagnosis using ultrasound or by CVS or amniocentesis. The student will be exposed to specialty clinics in our field including: HIV, multiple gestation and substance abuse. Students will participate in our division rounds including NICU and PDC conferences, MFM conference and ultrasound conference. Sample Selective Schedule: Wk 1 AM PM Wk 2 AM PM Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday **Please meet with your selective director on Day 1 to finalize your two week schedule. MFM Selective Objectives In addition to the core OB objectives, on completion of your MFM selective you should be able to: 1) Discuss preconception evaluation 2) Discuss 1st and 2nd trimester screening, discuss diagnostic testing i.e. CVS and amniocentesis 3) Discuss genetic inheritance patterns, give examples of each 4) Describe common ultrasound diagnoses e.g. NTD’s, abdominal wall defects, congenital heart defects, GI and GU anomalies 5) List common teratogens and their effect on the fetus 6) Discuss the risks of multiple gestation including mono/di, mono/mono twins, discordant anomalies, and selective termination. 7) Discuss HIV in pregnancy including screening, transmission, drug Rx, and indications for c/s 8) Discuss substance abuse in pregnancy, including barriers to care and drug Rx Student Responsibility/Expectations: The student is expected to attend all assignments. Near the end of the 2 week rotation, the student will give a 15-30 minute lecture on a MFM topic of their choice and will have an opportunity to provide feedback about the rotation. The student should keep a log of clinics attended, procedures seen and problems discussed. This should be turned in at the completion of the MFM rotation.
