Magnets
1. A magnet can attract magnetic material
(e.g. iron, steel, cobalt or nickel) or
another magnet placed near it
2. There is a magnetic field around a
magnet
3. Like poles repel (north/north)
4. Opposite poles attract (north/south)

Electromagnets
1. When an electric current flows through
a coil of wire there is a magnetic field
around the wire. One end of the coil
becomes a north-seeking pole and the
other end becomes a south-seeking
pole. This is called an electromagnet.
2. Reversing the current in an
electromagnet reverses the poles of
the electromagnet.
3. Electromagnets are used in simple
motors and circuit breakers

Electric Motors
1. When a wire carrying an electric
current is placed in a magnetic field it
experiences a force. The size of the
force increases with;
a) increasing strength of the magnetic
field
b) increasing current
2. The direction of the force can be
reversed by changing the direction of
the current or the magnetic field
