GEORGIA STUDIES FINAL EXAM STUDY GUIDE GEOGRAPHY • Georgia is in the western & northern hemispheres. • GA is north of the equator & west of the prime meridian. • The Fall Line separates the Piedmont region from the Coastal Plain Region. NATIVE AMERICANS • The Green Corn Ceremony was an important harvest ceremony of the Cherokee Indians. • Many Native Americans settled along rivers. COLONIAL GEORGIA REQUIREMENTS OF EARLY COLONISTS • Each man was to defend the new colony against all enemies. • Land could not e sold. • Colonists were to cultivate the land and set aside a portion to grow mulberry trees (for silk production). • Obey regulations set by the trustees. COLONIAL GEORGIA WHO COULDN’T COME? • Catholics – afraid they would sympathize with Spanish Catholics in Florida. • Blacks- no slavery allowed. • Liquor Dealers – avoid problems associated with alcoholism. • Lawyers – wanted colonists to settle differences out of court. French and Indians • Great Britain wins & King George issues the “Proclamation of 1763”. • Georgia gains land: 1.Western boundary becomes Mississippi River 2.Southern boundary becomes th St. Mary’s River GEORGIA & THE REVOLUTION • GA reluctant to join because it was the youngest colony & still dependent on Great Britain in many ways. • Nancy Hart was a Patriot who helped capture Tories. “JOIN OR DIE” • The difference between the use of "Join or Die" in 1754 and 1765 is that Franklin had designed it to unite the colonies for 'management of Indian relations' and defense against France, but in 1765 American colonists used it to urge colonial unity against the British EARLY STATEHOOD • The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the U.S. The western boundary becomes the Rocky Mountains. EARLY STATEHOOD (continued) • Atlanta was first known as TERMINUS because it marked the end of the Western and Atlantic railroad line from Chattanoog, Tennessee. EARLY STATEHOOD (continued) • The phrase “manifest destiny” referred to the idea that it was the destiny of the U.S. to spread from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. ANTEBELLUM GEORGIA • Missouri Compromise: 1. Missouri enters as a slave state. 2. Maine enters as a free state. 3. Henceforth, slavery will be prohibited north of Missouri’s southern boundary.
