Human Characteristics Physical Characteristics What are the main languages, customs, and beliefs.. What man-made structures exist Landforms (mountains, rivers, forest etc..) climate, wildlife, soil etc… HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION How do humans and the environment affect each other We depend on it We modify it We adapt to it People depend on the Yakima River for water and irrigation People modify our environment by heating and cooling buildings, knocking down trees to build, blasting holes in mountains for tunnels, mining, herding etc.. We adapt to the environment by wearing clothing suitable for summer (shorts) and winter (coats), rain and shine. Depend Modify What did the depend on from their environment, or use, to help them develop and survive? How did they change (modify) their environment to help them develop and survive? Adapt How did they adapt (change themselves and their civilization) as a result? Examples from Mesopotamia Depend With the absence of stone & few trees, mud bricks used for architecture: they developed the first arches Modify Mesopotamians were the first to develop/use a system of irrigation. Adapt First to develop large cities: shared communities for a common good. Examples from Mesopotamia Depend Depended on fertile land for vegetables, and crops such as flax, wheat & barley.
