Geography is the study of the earth and everything on it. The 5 Themes of Geography originated by the National Geographic Society to fulfill a need for geographers (people who study the earth and everything on it) categorize everything they learn. Location Place Human-Environment Interaction Movement Regions Two types of location: absolute and relative Scotiabank Place Absolute Location A specific place on the Earth’s surface Uses a grid system Latitude and longitude A global address 1000 Palladium Dr. Ottawa, ON Where a place is in relation to another place Uses directional words to describe Cardinal and intermediate directions About 10 minutes from the AMC theatre Theme 2: PLACE What is it like there, What kind of place is it? Human Physical Characteristics • What are the main languages, customs, and beliefs. • How many people live, work, and visit a place. Characteristics Things that occur naturally, such as mountains, rivers, type of soil, wildlife, climate etc. How People Interact With Their Environment People . . . Adapt to Their Environment Modify Their Environment Depend on Their Environment http://www.fotosearch.com/comp/corbis/DGT119/BAG0017.jpg THEME 4: MOVEMENT How people, goods, and ideas are moved from place to place Human Movement • Trucks, Trains, Planes Information Movement • Phones, computer (email), mail Idea Movement • How do fads move from place to place? TV, Radio, Magazines THEME 5: REGIONS Areas with similar physical traits, or similar cultural traits Formal Regions • Regions defined by actual boundaries (Provinces, Countries, Cities) • Regions defined by similar characteristics (Corn Belt, Rocky Mountain region, Chinatown). Functional Regions • Regions defined by a function (newspaper service area, cell phone coverage area). Vernacular Regions • Regions that have no formal boundaries but are understood in our mental maps of the world. How am I ever going to remember all five of these themes?!...Mr. Help, to the rescue! M Movement R Region HE Human Environment Interaction L Location P Place Your assignment Describe a place you love using the 5 Themes of Geography. Make sure you use every theme! A place I love is the Hintonburger restaurant. Its absolute location is 1096 Wellington St W Ottawa, ON K1Y 2Y4. It is about 10 minutes west of downtown and close to Bridgehead. The Ottawa River is just a bit North of it. (absolute and relative LOCATION) It is where the old KFC used to be on Wellington. There are lots of staff who come from all different backgrounds. The main language I head being spoken is English. It is always busy and loud.(PLACE) The restaurant has adapted to the environment because it has air conditioning to help handle hot Ottawa summers! It is a modified space because it used to be KFC and so they changed it to be a burger place. Some people depend on it for meals, and its employees depend on it for wages and work. (H-E Interaction) Trucks and vans make food deliveries to the Hintonburger. People bus, drive or walk to get there. There are always lots of people sitting inside on their laptops or on their phones. It has been written up in the newspaper before and that has helped it become so popular. It won a burger contest in Ottawa too (Ottawa Citizen).(MOVEMENT) It is in Eastern Ontario, in a region of Ottawa called Hintonburg. (REGION)
