The main meridian is the Prime Meridian that runs
from the North Pole to the South Pole passing
through Greenwich, England at Oº longitude.

These Meridians and Parallels work to divide the
earth into HEMISPHERES.
MAP BASICS
These Meridians and Parallels work to divide the
earth into HEMISPHERES. A hemisphere means to
be divided in halves or literally half a sphere or
circle.
MAP BASICS
The earth can be divided into the Eastern and Western
Hemispheres by the Prime Meridian.
MAP BASICS
The earth can also be divided into the Northern and
Southern Hemispheres by the Equator.

Requested Review: Place
• The features that make a location unique
• Two components of Place
– Physical location: land features,
mountains, plains, and plateaus, climate,
bodies of water
• Human characteristics: people, culture,
language, religion, buildings and landmarks,
cities
Requested Review: Region
What Places Have in Common
• Political Regions
• Landform Regions
• Agricultural Regions
• Cultural Regions

CHAPTER 1 – THE WORLD BEFORE THE
OPENING OF THE ATLANTIC
Section One – The Earliest Americans
FIRST MIGRATION
TO THE
AMERICAS
-First settlers probably
came during the last
Ice Age(known as the
Pleistocene glacial
epoch) that ended
about 10,000 B.C.
-
The Earth’s climate
became very cold
and many large
glaciers were formed
which caused ocean
levels to drop by as
much as 300 feet
lower than they are
today.
-
These first people
migrated here and
it took a long time.
-Migration is the
movement of people
or animals from
one place to
another.
-They were hunters following
after BIG GAME or very large
animals.
-A strip of land between northeastern Asia(Russia) and
present-day Alaska called the Bering Land Bridge or Beringia
is where North Americas first inhabitants(Paleo-Indians)
crossed the Bering Strait between 38,000 and 10,000 B.C.
-They were hunter-gatherers or people who hunted
wild animals and gathered wild plants for food.
-
• Over many years
they spread south
through current
day Canada, the
United States,
Mexico, Central
America and all
the way down to
the southern tip
of South
America.
-As the temperature of the Earth began to climb around
8000 B.C. the glaciers began to melt raising the ocean
levels and covering the land bridge with water.
