Evaluation of distribution Alternatives of Pantex Spatial database for the Pantex Plant Presented by Ye Maggie Ruan (http://www.ce.utexas.edu/stu/ruanym/homepage/Research.htm) Outline Background and Objectives Current Status of Pantex Environmental Database Distribution Alternatives Solution Criteria Evaluation of Distribution Alternatives Conclusions Recommendations Background America’s only nuclear weapon assembly and disassembly site Environmental Issues – Risk to Workers and the Publics – Air and Water Quality – Effect on agriculture Public Concerns – Safety – Environment Spatial Database – Environmental Description Objectives To evaluate the several alternatives of the spatial database distribution methods and to recommend the best solution for the spatial database distribution for the Pantex Plant. Current Pantex Database Sybase and Intergraph MGE Contains Environmental samples, Regulatory limits, Facility management, Map information 6,657 Sampling Locations 2.6GB, 197 Tables and 3,566,104 Data Records Updated Daily Distribution Alternatives Online – Oracle – Sybase – MS SQL Server CD-ROM Internet Online Spatial Database Arc/Info Librarian ArcStorm Ethernet NFS or File Sharing Spatial Data Server Oracle Sybase Microsoft SQL Server Attributes Data Server Clients: ArcView & Arc/Info MapOjbects Other mapping applications Ethernet TCP/IP DBMS Network Client CD-ROM Approach Regional data Coverages Shape files Grids Images ArcView Arc/Info MapOjbects Other mapping applications Sampling data MS Access Tables Queries Microsoft Access Internet Approach Web Browser Database Publishing Internet Map Server(e.g. ArcView IMS) Map Café SDE GIS DBMS Internet Custom Application TCP/IP esrimap.dll Web server extension Web Server ArcView IMS ArcView IMS extension ArcView Solution Criteria Distribution Range(Wide) Distribution Formats (Multiformat) Ease of Use (Fast, Query) Ease of Database Management (Backup, Update) Cost and time for implementation Evaluation of Online Database Distribution Range – limited by the internal network Distribution Formats – Single format Ease of Use – Fast and Provide Query Ability Ease of Database Management – Easy Cost and time for implementation – Expensive and Complicated Evaluation of CD-ROM Approach Distribution Range – Wide, but maybe slow to order. Distribution Formats – Single format Ease of Use – Fast but No Query Ability, Simple and Customized Structure Ease of Database Management – May not be the most updated Cost and time for implementation – Simple and Cost Effective Evaluation of Internet Approach Distribution Range – Wide and Easy to Access Distribution Formats – Multi-format(Data and Dynamic Maps) Ease of Use – Provide Query Ability, but Rely on the Network Traffic Ease of Database Management – Easy Cost and time for implementation – Moderate Conclusions The Online Database provides ease of use and management of the spatial database, but its distribution range is limited by the internal network. The CD-ROM Approach provide wide distribution range, simple data structure, and it is fast to use, but it doesn’t provide the query ability and may not be the most updated. The Internet provided the widest distribution range and multi-format distribution, but it relies on the traffic of the Network. Recommendation - Optimal solution For the environmental engineers within the Pantex internal network, online database is the best choice For environmental engineers outside the Pantex internal network, Internet Data Publishing is a good choice. CD-ROM can be used for more static regional description or a customized project specific database. For general public, Internet Map Server is the solution.
