Contents Background PSTN Migration to NGN TTA’s Draft NGN Reference Model NGN Convergence NGcN Vision Summary & Discussion 29/04/2003 GSC-8, OTTAWA Slide 2 Background Korean operators recognized enough reason to NGN – Shift of major voice market from fixed to mobile, in Korea, since 1999 – Internet data traffic and revenue exceed legacy service in Korean fixed operators, since 2000 • Internet/data/leased service have become major revenue stream for them • Need of transfiguring the network for advanced accommodation is raised – Saturation of broadband Internet access is estimated, within several years • A new tractor for expanding service opportunity and market are desired • Trend of IP based convergence is expected to generate new opportunities – Cellular operators also have deep interest on NGN • Recent development of advanced mobile technology has become IP centric NGN deployment is currently ongoing in Korea – Fixed operators started AGW/SSW deployment since 2002, under a stepwise plan – Pursuing unified management profit over packet based functions in the initial stage, and enhancement of service capability with advanced network in the next 29/04/2003 GSC-8, OTTAWA Slide 3 NGN Model for PSTN Migration Basically Operator’s view Stepwise migration of legacy service & resource are mostly emphasized PSTN centric, “national infrastructure” approach minimizing risk Not so much prompt return benefit from the investment SCP Stepwise substitution with AGW No.7 Signaling Link No.7 Toll/Tandem Switch Toll/Tandem Switch Local Switch Trunk User side Integration with AGW Toll/Tandem Network Trunk Trunk Trunk SSW SSW Local Switch Trunk SGW TGW AGW Turnover Link AGW DSL IP Network IAD IP Termination 29/04/2003 GSC-8, OTTAWA AS AS IP Termination Curtsy of KT Slide 4 TTA’s Draft on NGN Reference Model Access focused view assuming stable & secure backbone core Debating/editing is ongoing in TTA, concerning many international models Eligible to realize multimedia service VoP and multimedia Service/control Domain SDB Legacy PSTN SOHO network VG Hb DP DP Aa Ha HG/ Ad Ab LC Ac LT NT Ac Aa Ha TG SG rAG Cg AP Server Sa Cc SCP Cb Ca ASS Cd TSS Ca Ca Ba MRF Ba SCP TSR Cf Bb Ce TSS Cf CSR Bc CSR AG Ac Da AR Db BR Dc BR Best Effort Internet Domain Customer Premise Network 29/04/2003 Da Access Network GSC-8, OTTAWA AR Db BR Dc BR IPv6 based Internet Core Network Slide 5 NGN Premium Network Concept VoIP NGN vision of the PSTN trunk Consensus has been developed on the IP based unified core network capable to accommodate number of logical networks using different QoS and levels of security feature AG distinguishes difference of the premium link & best effort link as of Diffserv boundary node; “guaranteeing stable migration of infrastructure” or “launching to the early deployment of emerging multimedia service” Nonetheless of their pros and cons, we see that the different positions interfere smooth and stable standardization of NGN However, one fortunate aspect is wide consensus on the ultimate convergence of various networks into one transport based on IP Leading NGN technology with the promising vision of NGcN is believed of great help to astringent different positions in its deployment The initiative NGcN has provided new technical momentum along with the sense of convergence, such as broadcasting-telecom convergence in Korea NGcN is believed to generate more opportunities of advanced technology development while restructuring existing communication service market 29/04/2003 GSC-8, OTTAWA Slide 9 Issues for Discussion GSC is invited to note the importance of the work on ultimate network convergence aspect actually leading NGN realization There are a lot of standardization effort in various standard bodies, on the convergence aspect involved in many different fields of technology such as broadcasting, WMAN, and home networking It is suggested that GSC to identify ways to collaborate with those effort in order to establish a vision of “extended NGN” incorporating diverse technologies outside NGN scope, under the concept of convergence Such activity is believed to encourages timely deployment of rich and economical NGN service and network 29/04/2003 GSC-8, OTTAWA Slide 10
