ABOUT THE COURSE
The A-Z Diabetes Educator Boot Camp is a week-long, in-depth course designed to enhance the
health care professional’s knowledge of diabetes and promote patient and family centered
partnerships in self-management. Current diabetes guidelines and standards of practice and
evidence-based strategies in Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) provide the foundation
for the Boot Camp. This course will enable participants to more effectively facilitate behavior
change in people with diabetes.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Nurses, dietitians, health educators, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, and
other health care professionals interested in helping people with diabetes achieve behavior
change
OVERALL OBJECTIVES
● Describe the diagnosis and pathophysiology of diabetes type 1 & 2
● Identify the role of nutrition and oral health with diabetes treatment
● Explain blood glucose monitoring and pattern management
● Describe oral hypoglycemic agents, injectable medications and technology
● Review self-management tools and skills needed for people with diabetes
● Examine diabetes during stages of pregnancy and childhood
● Explore the importance of daily activity and managing stressors
● List complications with diabetes, prevention and treatment

34.0 CNE contact hours
Eastern AHEC Department of Nursing Education is an Approved Provider of continuing nursing education by
the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Centers
Commission on Accreditation.
Dietitians
Application has been submitted to the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), an approver of Continuing
Professional Education (CPE) programs for Registered Dietitians.

Attendance at the entire program is required for credit. Participation is verified by check-in at the start of
the program and an initial-out at the conclusion of the program. Certificates of completion will be available
after the participant completes the evaluation.
REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Pre-registration is required to assure space in this program. The fee for registration is $400 and includes
breakfast, afternoon breaks, supplies, and credit. All registrations MUST be received prior to
April 11, 2016.
