provide quality pharmaceutical services through the human and institutional capacity building of pharmacy educators, current and future pharmacists and institutional capacity building of drug information centers Objectives: • To strengthen the capacity of SoP, AAU to provide clinical-oriented, evidence-based, unbiased, and up-to-date pharmaceutical information for faculty and students • To enhancing the capacity of pharmacy professionals to deliver quality services by establishing a model Continuing Pharmacy Education program at SoP • To strengthen the quality of pharmacy services by assisting SoP, AAU in the implementation of internationally recognized clinical pharmacy education and training including the development of a five year clinical pharmacy Bachelors’ degree program and of Pharmacy Achievements and outcomes: • National BS pharmacy curriculum was extended from 4 to 5 years, with increased training and experiential learning in clinical pharmacy practice • Trained the first cohort of Masters students in clinical pharmacy • Establishment of a replicable Drug Information Center of Excellence at AAU/Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital and five satellite centers at regional universities • Masters students in clinical pharmacy completed a 6-week residency in clinical pharmacy training through a south-south collaboration with the University Teaching hospital in Zambia • Conducted training for healthcare workers on medication safety, safe use of medications in the emergency department, and drug information HIV/AIDS Twinning Center HIV/AIDS Twinning Center AAU/Tikur Anbessa Hospital to provide care and antiretroviral treatment services for PLW/HIV by developing EM training, education and resources Objectives • Strengthen human and organizational capacity to provide EM services by providing training and education • Provide resources and education for the new Emergency Medicine Training (EMT) Center • Increase coordination of health care services and client retention in ARV treatment programs • Work with AAU to create EM pre-service, distance learning and clinical trainings HIV/AIDS Twinning Center HIV/AIDS Twinning Center Medicine Training Center (EMTC) • Graduated 4 Ethiopian physicians and 4 nurses from a UW-hosted fellowship in Emergency Medicine • Launched a three year Emergency Medicine Residency Program, 2010 • Launched Masters program in Emergency and Critical Care in Nursing Program, 2010 • Trained over 1000 health care workers in EM trainings such as Basic Life Support, Basic and Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support • Supported Ethiopia’s FMOH Pre-Hospital Care Initiative • Established an Evidence-Based Medicine Learning Resource Center (LRC) • Implemented Quality Improvement projects to improve patient care and hospital services at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital HIV/AIDS Twinning Center HIV/AIDS Twinning Center services in Ethiopia by improving emergency medicine services and training opportunity at AAU/TASH and other partnering hospital Objectives: • Strengthen pediatric emergency and medical services and pre-service and in-service pediatric medicine training opportunities at AAU/TASH • Strengthen the human and organizational capacity of AAU/TASH to provide pediatric emergency medicine services • Provide training opportunities at the Emergency Medicine Training Center to pre-service students, AAU faculty and staff, and other healthcare providers HIV/AIDS Twinning Center HIV/AIDS Twinning emergency medicine needs assessment and baseline survey to guide development of partnership objectives and activities • Trained 2 Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physicians, 2 Specialty Physicians • Established an Evidence-Based Medicine Learning Resource Center • Developed a condensed competency based Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellows Curriculum based on guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics • Developed and implemented four quality improvement projects to improve pediatric emergency medicine care and services at Tikur Anbessa Specialty Hospital (TASH) HIV/AIDS Twinning Center HIV/AIDS Twinning Center www.TwinningAgainstAIDS.org www.TwinningAgainstAIDS.org Summary Major achievements contributed by the partnerships to address Ethiopia’s human resources for health challenges include: • Initiation of Clinical pharmacy training in collaboration with Howard University • Establishment of Drug Information Centers • Training of four EM specialists in collaboration with UW to spearhead establishment of the Department of EM in the School of Medicine • Initiation of EM specialty training for doctors and nurses in the School of Medicine • Effective implementation of quality improvement projects to improve health services at Tikur Anbessa Teaching Hospital • Paediatric Emergency Fellowship has been initiated • Establishment of Center of Excellence, Emergency Medicine Training Center at AAU These projects are long awaited by respective schools of AAU , in some cases for over ten years.
