What the SAT® Measures
The SAT measures what students know and how well they apply
that knowledge.

It tests the same things
taught every day in high
school classrooms: reading,
writing and math.

SAT questions represent high
school curricula, testing skills in
geometry, algebra, grammar
and critical reading.

Teachers and educators review
every SAT question for
relevance and coherence.

Test Details
–
Three sections: critical reading,
mathematics and writing
–
Length: 3 hours, 45 minutes
(including three breaks)
–
Score range: 200–800 per section,
600–2400 overall
–
Question types:
• Critical Reading — Sentence Completions,
Reading Passages
• Mathematics — Number and Operations,
Algebra, Geometry, Statistics and Probability
• Writing — Essay, Identifying Errors, Improving
Grammar and Usage
