Profiles and Energy Management

The Context
• Many energy-consuming devices:

•
•
•
HVAC
Lighting
Appliances
IT equipment
Elevators
Industrial equipment
…
Demand response programs
Sustainability initiatives
Time-dependent energy prices
“Smart Grid”
The Big Goal
• How can we improve energy management…
– without requiring that the energy manager become
an expert on the operating characteristics of each
energy-consuming device in an enterprise?
– in ways that scale from homes to large enterprises?
Profiles and Data Communication
• Data communication standards are important,
but they are not always sufficient for
interoperability
• Profiles are developed in order to improve
interoperation between devices or systems for
a particular application
• A profile may specify:
– A set of features from one or more standards
– An interpretation of one or more standards
Profiles for Control Applications
• LonMark
– Functional profiles for common control functions
• BACnet
– Device profiles for several classes of devices
(workstation, building controller, …)
– Load Control Object
– Coming soon: BACnet application interfaces
• Zigbee
– Application profiles (e.g. Home Automation)

Profiles for Energy Management
• What general characteristics of profiles would
be most beneficial for energy management?

–
Focus on energy management needs
Generic (not device specific) interfaces
System- or device-level management
Service discovery capability
Where are we?
• We are still figuring out how to develop
profiles for energy management.
