Notes SPI 0807.T/E.3 Intended Benefits and Unintended Consequences Sep 23, 2015 Tennessee SPI Objective: Distinguish between the intended benefits and the unintended consequences of a new technology. Essential Question(s) 1) In regards to technology products, what are intended benefits? Can I list some examples? 2) In regards to technology products, what are unintended consequences? Can I list some examples? Check for Understanding Explore how the unintended consequences of new technologies can impact society. Intended Benefit When a company designs a new product, they are addressing a need. (This is Step 1 of the engineering design process). This need is essentially the same as the intended benefit. The intended benefit is what the engineers purposely include when designing some product or process. Example Cell phones -need being addressed is communication. -Intended benefit is more effective communication. Example Cars -need being addressed is transportation. -Intended benefit is more effective transportation. Unintended Consequences …are uses or results that engineers DO NOT purposely include when designing some product or process. …these are things that WERE NOT part of the design plan. Examples Cell phones and Cars -One unintended consequence is wrecking your car while talking or texting while driving. Cell phones & cars WERE NOT designed to cause traffic accidents Intended benefit -cell phones were designed for communication Intended benefit -cars were designed for transportation Simplified Summary On the TCAP test, intended benefits are good and unintended consequences are bad. So when you see a question like this… (see below) …select the answer that describes something GOOD Benefit Good Bad Simplified Summary On the TCAP test, intended benefits are good and unintended consequences are bad. So when you see a question like this… (see below) …select the answer that describes something BAD Good Bad NOTE: In reality, Unintended consequences are not always negative. Sometimes they are very positive and beneficial Example: In WWII, engineers invented sonar to enable surfaceships to locate and destroy submarines.. One positive unintended consequence is sonogram technology (ultra-sound) for babies.
