What is Wireless Communication? Transmitting/Receiving voice and data using electromagnetic waves in open space. • The information from sender to receiver is carrier over a well defined frequency band (channel). • Each channel has a fixed frequency bandwidth and capacity (bit-rate) • Different channels can be used to transmit information in parallel and independently. 5/25/2017 Department of Electrical and Electronics, Nepal Engineering College 1 Why Wireless Communication? • Freedom from wires No cost of installing wires or rewiring Mobile devices possible E.g.: Bluetooth, WiFi • Stay connected Roaming allows flexibility to stay connected anywhere and any time 5/25/2017 Department of Electrical and Electronics, Nepal Engineering College 2 Wireless Vs Mobile • Wireless does not necessarily mobile. • Wireless System may be: mean Fixed (e.g. Metropolitan Area Network) Portable (e.g. Wireless interaction between TV and VCR) Mobile (e.g. Mobile phone) 5/25/2017 Department of Electrical and Electronics, Nepal Engineering College 3 Telecom Service provider of Nepal • • • • • • NDCL- Nepal doorsanchar Company limited NCELL UTL- United Telecom Limited STM- STM Telecom Sanchar Pvt.Ltd NSTPL- Nepal Satellite Telecom Pvt.Ltd STPL- Smart Telecom Pvt.Ltd 5/25/2017 Department of Electrical and Electronics, Nepal Engineering College 4 Telecom Statistics at a glance (as of Ashad, 2070, 15 July, 2013)-NTA MIS Report • Available Voice Telephony Services LMS-Location and Monitoring services GMPCS-Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite 5/25/2017 Department of Electrical and Electronics, Nepal Engineering College 5 Telecom Statistics at a glance (as of Ashad, 2070, 15 July, 2013)-NTA MIS Report • Data Internet services 5/25/2017 Department of Electrical and Electronics, Nepal Engineering College 6 Current Wireless Systems • Cellular Systems • Wireless LANs (802.11a/b/g, Wi-Fi) • Satellite Systems • Paging Systems • Bluetooth • Ultrawideband radios (UWB) • Zigbee/802.15.4 radios • WiMAX (802.16) 5/25/2017 Department of Electrical and Electronics, Nepal Engineering College 7 Emerging Systems • • • • • • 5/25/2017 Cognitive radio networks Ad hoc/mesh wireless networks Sensor networks Distributed control networks The smart grid Biomedical networks Department of Electrical and Electronics, Nepal Engineering College 8 Current Research by Prof. Theodore (Ted) S.
