3) Slavery to be prohibited in new
territories north of 36°30’ latitude

Election of 1824
• Andrew Jackson won popular votes but
not enough electoral votes to win.
• The House of
Representatives had to
choose the winner
– They chose Adams.
• Jackson claimed Adams
made a corrupt bargain
with Henry Clay.
• When Adams chose Clay to
be secretary of state,
support for Adams
weakened.
