Dates Founded
Maine was at one time part of
Massachusetts. It became its own state
in 1820, becoming the 23rd state
admitted to the United States of America,
although its northern borders were not
finalized until 1842
Reasons Founded
Maine was admitted to the United States
in 1820. The number 1 reason for
admitting Maine was to keep the balance
of free and slave states.
Maine was a free state and Missouri was
admitted to the US as a slave state.
Important People in Maine’s beginning
The original people of Maine were Algonquianspeaking Native Americans
The first European settlement in Maine was in
1604 by a French party.
The first English settlement in Maine, the
short-lived Popham Colony, was established
by the Plymouth Company in 1607.

The question of Maine's
ownership was a matter of
continuing dispute between
England and France
throughout the first half of the
18th century.
In 1765 a mob seized a quantity
of tax stamps at Falmouth (now
Portland), and attacks on
customs agents in the province
became common.
After the War of 1812, Maine
wanted to separate from
Massachusetts.
