Kennedy: 35th President of the US (1961-63). Premier Nikita Khrushchev: led the USSR during part of the Cold War (after Stalin, from 1953-1964). Fidel Castro : Communist dictator of Cuba from 1961-2011. He is responsible for making Cuba a socialist country which has often been at odds with the United States. Notably, the Bay of Pigs Invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Cuban Missile Crisis : An intense crisis that developed in 1961 as a result of Castro’s decision to allow the Soviet Union to base nuclear missiles in Cuba. The Cold War The Cast of the Cuban Missile Crisis Who was involved? • John F. Kennedy (USA), Fidel Castro (Cuba), & Nikita Khrushchev (USSR). The Cuban Missile Crisis: What happened? The Soviets wanted to install nuclear missiles in Cuba. When this was discovered by the US Air Force in October 1962, Kennedy imposed a quarantine (a separation or isolation) on all offensive weapons bound for Cuba.
