The Respiratory System By Joanna Gong and Austin Yoo Key Concepts Key Words The structure and functions of the lungs Why do we get hiccups? Diseases associating the respiration system How much oxygen our body receives oxygen alveoli carbon dioxide Gas Exchange Structures that Air Passes 1. Nose (nostril) - air enters body 2. Pharynx - nose to throat (pharynx) 3. Trachea - the pipe for throat to lung 4. Bronchus - moves into left and right bronchi (bronchus) 5. Lung - the air goes from the lungs to the air sacs Structure & Functions moves oxygen from the outside environment into the body removes carbon dioxide and water from our body. Taking in Oxygen oxygen ->needed for energy-releasing chemical reactions taking place in cells respiration is not breathing. respiration = chemical reaction in cells What are hiccups? diaphragm and nearby muscles convulse -> briefly gulp in air. within 35 milliseconds, the glottis slams shut > making one hiccup Why do we get hiccups? Usually hiccups are act of the body trying to protect itself. ex) hot food, breathing in too much air, eating too quickly etc) Asthma long time lung disease that inflames and narrows the air ways. Asthma airways swell, muscles tighten, and mucus, make it hard to breathe. Bronchitis -acute inflammation of the air passages within lungs -trachea and bronchi = infected Small Activity The differences in your body when you inhale and exhale feel your ribs while you breathe how does it change? what do you think is happening with the lungs? Inhaled Air Inhaled Air Exhaled Air Exhaled Air Differences - oxygen decrease (5%) - Carbon Dioxide increases - Other gases increase bibliography http://www.scribd.com/doc/3394749/lungmodel-with-two-lungs-and-diaphragm-lab http://www.fi.edu/learn/heart/systems/respirati on.html http://yucky.discovery.com/flash/body/pg00013 8.html other cites and the text book :) Final Checkup What is the respiratory system? Name one part of the system and explain it Explain about one disease
