The Circulatory System
Warm Up

Write down three things you can do to
keep your heart healthy
The Circulatory System
This system carries
food and oxygen to all
the cells of the body.
 It is made up of the
heart, blood & blood
vessels.

The Circulatory has 2 big jobs
Big job # 1 – Carrying Food, Water, &
Oxygen.
 The circulatory system has the task of
delivering the necessary “goods” to the
cells. It’s like getting the newspaper each
morning.

Big Job #2 -Removing Wastes from
the cells.
 In our everyday activities we create waste.
The wastes cannot stay in the cells. They
would build up and prevent the cells from
doing their job.
 The circulatory system carries the waste
to other parts of the body where they are
filtered and removed from the body

The Heart




The heart is a muscle. Its
job is to pump blood to
all of the cells in your
body.
The heart is the strongest
muscle in the human
body.
It pumps the blood to
your brain cells, nerves,
and bone cells.
It pumps 24 hours a day
without a break.
FACTS ABOUT HEART
The Heart is about the size of your fist and is
located in the middle of your chest.
 Its upper chambers are the right atrium and left
atrium. The lower chambers are the right
ventricle and the left ventricle.
 Arteries pump oxygen rich blood to your body;
away from heart
 Veins carry waste filled blood back to the heart
and then to the lungs, to be cleaned and sent
back out the the body.

Terms
Red Blood Cells- Carry
oxygen & carbon
dioxide to & from the
lungs. Produced in
the bone marrow.
 White Blood CellsDestroy bacteria and
are produced in the
spleen.

Terms
Blood Platelets- Aid blood in clotting to
held stop bleeding.
 Plasma- Liquid part of blood. About 90%
water
 Blood is made up of 45% cells and 55%
plasma

REVIEW
How is the circulatory system similar to a
paper boy?
 How big is your heart and were is it
located?
 What blood vessel carries blood to your
cells, away from your heart?
 What blood vessel carries blood back to
your heart?

Review continued…
Aid in blood clotting?
 Which blood cells carry oxygen and carbon
dioxide to and from the lungs?
 Which blood cells destroy bacteria and
where are these cells produced?
 What is the liquid part of blood called?
 Name 3 parts of the circulatory system.
 Name 3 blood vessels.

Capillaries
 Capillaries
are extremely small vessels
located within the tissues of the body
that transport blood from the arteries
to the veins.
