Romantic composer, mainly of opera. He was
one of the most influential composers of the
19th century. His works are frequently
performed in opera houses throughout the
world and some of his themes have long since

donna è mobile" from Rigoletto, “Va’
pensiero" (The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves)
from Nabucco, “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici" (The
Drinking Song) from La Traviata and the
“Grand march" from Aida.

From 1852 to 1858 Matejko studied at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow under
Wojciech Korneli Stattler and Władysław Luszczkiewicz. After studying under the
history painter Hermann Anschütz in Munich (1859) and then briefly and less
successfully in Vienna, Matejko returned to Krakow, where he lived for the rest of
his life. Beginning in 1873, he was for many years the principal of the School of Fine
Arts. Since 1904 he has a section in the National Museum in Krakow called Dom
Jana Matejki.
Matejko is well known for his historical and batalistic works like Battle of
Grunwald and portraits of Polish kings. Jan Matejko created many woodcuts based
on his own drawings. He created illustrations depicting historical figures and
buildings. Kraków Academy of Fine Arts named after Matejko in 1979, where he

Fryderyk Chopin
(1810-1849)
The greatest Polish composer, celebrated world-wide: his works
are performed at concerts and recorded by the most outstanding musicians.
Chopin's creative output is one of the most enduring elements of the world's
musical culture. Chopin was a musical genius, a highly talented composer
and a matchless pianist. As a composer he synthetized bold musical ideas in
the domain of harmony, melody, texture and timbre with the simplicity of
folk motifs and so elevated raised the piano to the status of a major
instrument. His mastery of form, and the melodic and harmonic wealth of
his music became an unattainable model for many composers. Chopin's
creative output established new ways of development for music and has been
a source of inspiration for many succeeding composers.
Chopin’s works
genre by genre:
Ballades (4), Chamber works (3),
Etudes (27), Impromptus (4),
Mazurkas (59), Minor Works (21),
Nocturnes (21), Piano Concertos (2),

Krzysztof Penderecki
He was born on November 23rd, 1933 in Dębica, he is a Polish composer and
conductor. His 1960 avant-garde Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima for string
orchestra brought him to international attention, and this success was followed by
acclaim for his choral St. Luke Passion. Both these works exhibit novel compositional
techniques. Since the 1970s Penderecki's style has changed to encompass a postRomantic idiom. He has won prestigious awards including Grammy Awards in 1987
and 1998 and 2001, and the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition in 1992.
As well as the works already mentioned, his compositions include four operas, eight
symphonies and other orchestral pieces, a variety of instrumental concertos, choral
settings of mainly religious texts, as well as chamber and instrumental works.
