Warm Up! • If I give you an organism to identify, how will you determine if it a plant? • What tools would you need and why? The World of Plants Chapter 1 Photosynthesis • TO DO: Write the equation (use words or chemical formulas) for photosynthesis. Why Study Plants? • Photosynthesis Sustains Life on Earth – Oxygen – Food • Medicines • Fuel, Shelter, Paper Products • Why else? Botany includes: • Plant systematics • Plant morphology • Evolutionary history of • Plant ecology plants • Plant genetics • Plant anatomy and physiology Plant Characteristics and Diversity • 1800s- Plants defined as having these 5 characteristics: 1. Plants are Multicellular Eukaryotes • Multicellular – Composed of many cells • Eukaryotes – Cells have a nucleus which contains the DNA 2. Almost all plants are capable of photosynthesis • Known as autotrophs • Make their own food • Distinguishes plants from mushrooms 3. Plants have cell walls composed of cellulose • a.k.a. Fiber • A chain of glucose molecules • Gives structure and support to cell walls 4. Plants have 2 Adult Forms • Spores – Reproductive cells that can reproduce asexually • Pollen and Egg – Pollen fertilizes egg to produce an embryo that develops into an adult 5. Plants have a multicellular embryo protected within the female parent • Prevents embryo from drying out • Distinguishes plants from algae Write a 1-page reflection… • What has been your experience with plants in the past? Do you grow a garden, etc.? • Would you consider yourself to have a “green thumb”? Why or why not? Give examples • What did you plant today? Why did you choose these plants? • Describe the steps you took to plant your seeds. (Procedure) • How do you plan to take care of your plants? • Do you have any concerns about working in the greenhouse? • Anything else you’d like to share? Homework: Reading and Plant Diagram • Directions: • Number the paragraphs and read the passage. Include evidence of a close reading- highlight, underline, make notes, etc. • Color in the diagram of the plant. Be sure to color code the key to match your choices for your diagram. You may use crayon, colored pencil, or markers- whatever is available to you! Before you leave… POST IT! • Write 2 things you learned today or questions you still have
