The Twelve Olympians •Pay attention to the pictures •Hint: You will see a few on your first Unit Test Zeus (Jupiter) • King of the gods and ruler of mankind • Central figure of the myths • Can be just and fair at times or cruel and manipulative • Symbols: eagle, thunderbolt, sceptre, oak tree, aegis (shield) Hera (Juno) • Queen of the gods • wife (and sister) of Zeus • A very powerful goddess known for her jealousy • Can be vicious and spiteful (usually because of Zeus’s infidelity) • Symbols: peacock, cow, Iris Poseidon (Neptune) • God of the sea, horses, and earthquakes • Zeus’s brother and second to him in power • Can be cruel and unpredictable when angry • Feuding with Odysseus and holds a grudge • Symbols: trident, horse, bull Hades (Pluto) • God of the underworld (did not live on Mount Olympus) • Brother of Zeus and Poseidon • Rules the dead with his wife Persephone • Symbols: helmet (makes him invisible when he leaves) Hestia (Vesta) • Goddess of hearth and home • Zeus’s sister • Symbols: hearth, fire Ares (Mars) • God of war • Vicious God • Hated by his parents (Zeus and Hera) • A ruthless bully, he is also a coward • Symbols: weapons, armor, vulture, dog Athena (Minerva) • Goddess of wisdom, war, reason, purity, and weaving • Emerges from her father Zeus’s head fully-grown and armed • Witty and clever, she favors Odysseus • Symbols: owl, olive tree, helmet, spear, Athens Apollo • God of sun, music, poetry, truth, and medicine • Son of Zeus and Leto and Artemis’s twin • Symbols: lyre, bow, laurel tree, dolphin, Delphi Aphrodite (Venus) • Goddess of love and beauty • Shows formidable power (with Cupid and Psyche) • Principal cause of the Trojan War • Married to Hephaestus • Symbols: Cupid (her son), dove, swan, myrtle Hermes (Mercury) • Messenger-god; god of commerce, travelers, and thieves • Son of Zeus and Maia • Fast and cunning • Guide leading the dead from Earth to Hades • Symbols: winged hat and sandals, caduceus (magic wand) Artemis (Diana) • Goddess of the moon and hunting; patroness of maidens • Apollo’s twin sister • Beautiful • Normally good and just, but demands a human sacrifice during the Trojan War • Symbols: bow and arrow, deer, cypress tree Hephaestus (Vulcan) • God of fire; forger of armor (extremely skillful) • Son of Hera (and maybe Zeus) • Married to Aphrodite • Only ugly Olympian and partially crippled • Kind, generous, and good-natured • Symbols: anvil and forge (fiery pit used by blacksmiths) Be sure to STUDY!! • I will be testing you on the 12 Olympians next class! • For each God, you need to know: -Greek and Roman name -Realm (what they’re the god of) -Symbols -Relationship/background
