Program Modification Form I Summary of Proposed Changes Physics and Astronomy Department/program This is a change to the specific courses that are required for a Minor in Summary Physics. There is no change in the number of credits required, instead the change is in which physics courses count towards the minor. II Endorsements and Approvals Please obtain the Program Chair/Director’s approval and Dean’s approval. (Mathematics prerequisites for the physics minor are MATH 152, 153, 251, and 311.) To earn a minor in physics the student must complete PHYS 211N-212N-213N-214N (or PHYS 111N-112N-113N-114N); PHYS 301; and eleven additional physics credits, at least eight of which must be upper division. (Mathematics prerequisites for the physics minor are MATH 152, 153, 251, and 311.) Possible concentrations for the eleven additional physics credits include: Classical Physics PHYS Course Title 311 Oscillations and Waves 325 Optics 375 Classical Mechanics 414 Electricity and Magnetism I Credits 2 3 3 3 Quantum Physics PHYS Course Title 311 Oscillations and Waves 341 Fundamentals of Modern Physics 461 Quantum Mechanics I 462 Quantum Mechanics II Credits 2 3 3 3 Experimental Physics PHYS 321 325 341 444 Course Title Electronics Optics Fundamentals of Modern Physics Modern Lab Credits 3 3 3 3 Electrical and Computational Physics PHYS Course Title Credits 321 Electronics 3 330 Methods of Communicating Physics 3 331 Computational Physics 3 414 Electricity and Magnetism I 3 Engineering Physics PHYS Course Title Credits 295 Engineering Mechanics - Statics 3 311 Oscillations and Waves 2 321 Electronics 3 446 Thermodynamics & Stat. Mechanics 3 These concentrations are meant to be suggestive only. All meet the Minor in Physics requirements of eleven additional credits with at least eight of these being upper-division. For additional possibilities, a student can consult with a physics advisor. Please explain/justify the new proposal or change. This broadened version of the requirements for a Minor in Physics will better meet the needs of our students. For example, we have had a number of chemistry majors interested in taking Quantum Mechanics I & II and using them both toward a Minor in Physics. This proposal would allow for that possibility. By allowing additional physics classes to count towards the minor and requiring at least eleven credits of upper-division physics classes, we are broadening the possibilities for students seeking a Minor in Physics while maintaining the rigor of the Minor. What other programs are affected by your proposal? None. Obtain signatures as requested above. V Copies and Electronic Submission Once approved, the original, a paper copy and an electronic file are submitted to the Faculty Senate Office, UH 221 ([email protected]). VI Department Summary Required if several proposals are submitted. In a separate document list program title and proposed change of all proposals.
