from the Protestant middle classes (the pettybourgeoisie)
• However, as we shall see, the Nazis got votes
from most groups in society including young
new voters and workers
• They had a broad appeal rooted in Protestant
middle class support

• Who voted for the Nazis is a controversial issue
as behind this lies the question ‘who was to
blame for Hitler?’

explanations
What degree of historical consensus about Nazi

Return to the list you made at the start of the lesson: Do you need to amend
any of your lists based on what you’ve learnt this lesson? Are you surprised by
any of these groups? Why?
Did the Nazis appeal to
every German?
• November 1928, Hitler:
‘[The NSDAP is] not the movement of any particular
class or of a particular status group or
profession…[instead it is] in the highest sense of the word
a German national party. It aims to encompass all
elements of the nation and to embrace all occupational
groups, to address each and every German of good will.’
To what extent do the sources you have studied today
confirm Hitler’s claim that the Nazis were successful in
appealing to ‘every German’?
