Middle or High School EGYPTIAN Civilization Middle and High School History By Sandra Baazaoui Why do we learned about the Egyptian Civilization? • This civilization was one of the first and oldest civilization that we know of. • They were a group of people who lived in Egypt more than five thousand years ago. • They were able to start a civilization because they were able to grow and built so many things that helped them survive and expand. This was because they live along the riverbank of the Nile River (the longest river of the world). What were the Pyramids and what did they meant for this Civilization? • They were gigantic tombs. Built along the desert and the first one was built by a priest named Imhotep for King Zoser. • This were burial tombs for pharaohs, queens and nobles. • Inside them were secret mazes of galleries leading to rooms where the pharaoh’s mummy coffin lies. Gods and Goddesses of Egypt • Some of their famous Gods and Goddesses who they believed watch over them where Ra (the sun god), Thoth (moon god)Isis (first queen), Osiris (first king), Horus (son of Osiris/Isis), Anubis, and Hathor just to mention a few. This gods all have their own temple. Why did they had Mummification? • Egyptians believed in life after death and mummification was the best way they knew how to preserved the body from decaying. • Only pharaohs (Egyptian rulers) and nobles were mummified. Egyptians believed pharaohs became gods after death. • The whole body was cover with cloth and the face was cover with a mask and then the mummy was placed in a coffin. What is happening now to this civilization? • Like many of the early civilizations the Egyptian Civilization was attack by empires that kept taking their land. • The Nile River is still the lifeblood of Egypt but its floodwater are now regulated by high dam. • Their gods and goddesses are just memories now. • The government is now headed by a president and a People’s Assembly instead of a god/goddesses or king and queen.
