Energy Comes in Several Forms

Thermal Energy



Thermal Energy is HEAT energy!
Everything is made up of molecules.
Molecules moving quickly and bumping into
each other create heat or thermal energy.
Radiation



Heat and energy radiate from an object.
The sun’s light and heat are a form of radiation.
Energy is radiated in the form of heat or
thermal energy.




Heat is conducted or passed from one object to
another.
Metal is a very good conductor or heat energy.
If you use a metal pan to bake brownies, the
metal pan conducts the heat energy from the
oven, through the pan, to the brownies.

Convection



Convection uses hot air to transfer energy.
When using a convection oven to bake, hot air
is distributed around the oven in order to cook
or bake the food.
Thermals in the atmosphere are an example of
convection. These pockets of warm air help to
keep gliders floating and sailing in the sky.
Kinetic Energy




Objects in motion possess Kinetic energy.
All objects have Kinetic energy.
The amount of Kinetic energy an object has
depends upon it’s mass.
Kinetic and Potential energy are related.
Potential



Potential energy is stored energy.
Stored energy has not been released in the
form of kinetic energy.
The amount of potential energy and object has,
depends on the mass of the object. A baseball
has less potential energy than a train.
