Structure of the Vulva
Vulva = all part of
the external
genitalia of female

Mons pubis: fatty, superior part of genitals
 Clitoris: erectile tissue below mons pubis, covered
by prepuce
 Labia majora: “large lips,” skin that has pubic hair
and pigments (homologous to scrotum)
 Labia minora: “small lips” skin that is hairless
 Urethral orifice (hole): opening of urethra
 Vaginal orifice (hole): opening of vagina
 Bartholin’s glands: glands lateral to vaginal orifice

Function of the Vulva
Mons pubis, labia majora and labia
minora protect clitoris and vagina
Clitoris: become erect and senses
touch, temperature, pleasure
Structure of the Vagina
Collapsible tube
~ 3 inches deep
Composed of smooth muscle that is
lined with a mucous membrane

Secrete lubrication (reduce friction
during intercourse)
