High Risk Groups
• People who have skin phototypes I or II. Children
(i.e., less than 18 yrs of age);
• People who have large numbers of nevi (moles)
and persons who tend to freckle;
• Individuals who have a history of frequent
childhood sunburn;
• People who have premalignant or malignant skin
lesions or sun damaged skin;
• People who are wearing cosmetics or taking
medications which may make them UV -sensitive.
Malignant melanomas
Health Risks of
Sunbeds
• Sun beds are designed to produce a tan
mainly through UVA radiation. In the past, it
was thought that UVA was a safe form of
radiation and that a sun bed tan was a
‘safe’ tan.
• Now we know that UVA can cause skin
cancer as well as ageing the skin, and is
just as damaging as sunlight.
Health Risks
• Some sunbeds emit levels x5 the
strength of the midday sun = UVI 60
• Output levels vary considerably (study
in the UK found up to a 60 fold
difference). Autier
The Image
• Increase risk of
skin cancer
• Sunbeds
accelerate all the
effects of photo
ageing in the skin:
wrinkling, sagging,
freckling blotchy
pigments change,
broken blood
vessels.

The Reality
The Reality
• A 13-year-old boy is
recovering after
sustaining severe burn
blisters to his face
after visiting a tanning
salon three times in a
day.
• He spent a total of 21
minutes under the
lights of the stand-up
booth.
Young 'tanorexics'
risking cancer
• A tan is an important fashion statement to
many teenagers, and the term "tanorexia"
has been coined by doctors
• Teenagers throughout Britain are
threatening their health through an
addiction to sunbeds, experts have warned.
Sunbed addiction left me
scarred, says Denise Van Outen
• Bubbly TV presenter Denise Van Outen has admitted
that her face has been left scarred by sunbeds.
The judge on BBC talent show I'd Do Anything said
she started using the tanning beds in her teenage
years and became addicted, developing what is
dubbed 'tanorexia'.
The 33-year-old says she now has scars on her face
which she has to conceal with heavy make up.
She said: "I used a sunbed when I was 18 because I
didn't know the risks, but I'm paying for it now.
Sunbeds (Regulation)
Act 2010
Will come into force 8th April 2011
• Ban on < 18 yr olds using sunbeds. (Unless for medical
treatment and under supervision)
• Sunbed users MUST wear protective eyewear, which
must be supplied by the sunbed operator
• Sunbed operators must both provide and display
comprehensive health information about the risks
